    Crossfit

Anyone else trying this? Our friends in Florida have devised their own DIY version, which they're calling Apestrong. They usually do Crossfit workouts of the day. It's really fun, and really hard! Today we did something called the Filthy Fifty...fifty of each chosen exercise, a straight fifty, meaning no changing until all fifty are completed or you collapse. Sample exercises from Filthy Fifty: walking lunges, kettlebell swings (with a dumbbell), burpies (horrible, horrible things: a squat thrust into a pushup and then a jump straight up...impossible to do with decent form; I could only do 22, and not all at once). There were a bunch of others.

I think this is a really cool way to get fit - the idea is that you never get used to anything, and are always adapting. Here's the website:

Welcome to CrossFit: Forging Elite Fitness

I have nowhere near the fitness level of many of the people who do this, but neither did my friends at first. I'm going to try to start a DIY group in NY!

    Hi Leela,

My brother just opened a Crossfit in Kingston, Ontario, and I've done a few workouts with him, and can attest that it is an AMAZING workout. He has many members that are very dedicated- a dancemate and fellow Bhuzzer, Nilifer, works out regularly there, and if she pops up in this thread, she could talk about it a lot better than I can!

Good luck with starting your group- I think it will catch on quickly!!

Men's Health magazine did an article on Crossfit a few months ago. I remember thinking "Dude, that would kick my @ss! But it might be fun..."

My husband and I have been doing CrossFit for a year and a half. It's great! Way more fun than just going to the gym, and much more functional fitness (whole body moves instead of isolation exercises). At our gym there are all kinds of people in classes, from new moms to elite athletes to 70 year old breast cancer survivors. You work hard, but everyone scales it to their ability. Love it!
