trumpet vs. bias cut skirt
I have some nice stretch velvet and want to make a trumpet shaped skirt. In the past, I've used a pattern I have that makes a long 2 piece bias skirt (A line with a bit of a flair). Has anyone ever used a pattern like that on stretch fabrics? I thought it might look nicer than a gored skirt pattern because it doesn't have all the seams, but still molds to the body. But I've never tried sewing a stretch fabric on the bias, will it be toooooo stretchy?
Here is an example of the pattern (I like how this person says this skirt takes 5 minutes only if you have a serger and are sober).

Re: trumpet vs. bias cut skirt
It will really stretch out.
Can you make the same pattern, add width (about 1-2 inches on each side to account for the bias stretch), and cut it with the grain?
Stretch fabrics should be cut so the stretch goes across the body.
PS,
I love your work!

Re: trumpet vs. bias cut skirt
I'm doing this very thing with stretch velvet on the bias.
It's turning out to be loser than I thought it would be, but I really like the drape of it on the bias. I will just need to reshape it for my [nonexistent] hips and the bum.
Also stitching it by hand and it's not fraying or anything.

Re: trumpet vs. bias cut skirt
I like the drape of bias, so I don't know if it will have the same swish if it is on grain. Maybe I should cut it a size or two smaller?
Thanks Gothique!

Re: trumpet vs. bias cut skirt
I have a street skirt exactly like that pattern, in rayon cut on the bias.
sounds from other sew-ers (had to do the dash because without, well...) that it might not make the best long skirt. I have a swishy trumpet skirt that has only three seams. the vertical seams are 12" apart finished, and they're straight down from the waistband to about 19" from the hem. at that point, the seamstress turned a right angle and the bottom part of each piece is a half circle, about 50" across. make sense? it's a lovely skirt...
