    Glittery fabric question

I bought some velvet fabric with glittery designs on it and I forgot that the glitter sheds off. Alot! Does anybody know how to stop it from shedding? I've heard spraying hairspray on it but I think that would get sticky. Any ideas?

I don't have any suggestions but I hope someone else does because I made a costume out of that glitter slinky fabric and my life has been inundated with glitter ever since. I leave a trail everytime I wear it, and the glitter almost killed my sewing machine! And this is 2+ years later too!

Sadly that is the nature of that fabric. To my knowledge the only way to slow the shedding is to actually vacuum away the excess glitter. You will lose a bit of the bling but it will help with the shedding. You will probably have to repeat the process.

Here's something I do not recommend. A friend and I bought matching skirts. Hoping to minimize the shedding she tossed the skirt in the dryer with a damp towel. Most of the glitter but none of the glitter adhesive shed in the dryer, her skirt was ruined and glitter adhered to everything else that placed in the dryer.

I bought a set here on Bhuz a year ago...and was so appaled, I asked the seller to take it back. She did...I had no idea this stuff shed like that. If I would have done an indoor party in it, I would have had to show up the next day to clean as part of my contract!

That would be messy. Thanks txchic. Anala, you are so funny! I took the fabric out of the bag, showed it to my hubby, and put it back in the bag. I looked at the floor and it was covered in glitter. I swepted and mopped the floor. It's five days later and I can still see a few specks here and there.

    Re: Glittery fabric question

Whenever I use glitter fabric, I take it outside and shake, shake, shake it. It does seem to help and I then have very sparkly front steps. But it is true that I still leave a little trail when I wear the fabric.

I once bought an amazing piece - 10 yards of it - I ended up giving it to a local consignment shop for their displays.

I store the skirt and fabric inside out, with the glitter turned inwards. Tends to help a bit when handling it. Still sheds, impossible to hide when wearing it or working with it. I have to wear eyewear when sewing or cutting the fabric, the bits of glitter seem to enjoy finding my eyes.

That's how I stored it in the bag too. It'll probably stay in there for a long time.
