Re: How low do you go?
Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know where those dimples come from? I've seen them on a few dancers (oddly enough, usually tribal dancers with long torsos) I think they look so cool, and have always wondered if they're a result of building up certain muscles in the lower back. Any ideas?

I have a really short waist and long legs and arms so I make sure to wear mine low. Otherwise, I look like belt and bra that forgot to get separated! Or even more, like a scarecrow waving my arms and legs!

Re: How low do you go?
LOL! I hear you--I have no torso, long legs and scary-long arms. I generally wear my skirts relatively low-ish as well...or rather, I can't wear anything high-waisted or that has a belly band. My skirts usually sit either right around my hip bones or slightly below where they peak. (I also have a very, very short rise, so the distance differences we're talking here are minimal--centimeters, really.
DaVid is absolutely right, though--the style of the costume should also play a role. There are some costumes that just aren't designed to be pulled down below the hip bones and look...well, kinda stupid when they are. Some of the high-waisted Emans and Bellas can come down a bit, but others really need to be worn higher up or it messes up the line of the design. Some of those asymetrical Sahars (and similar skirts)--the low point can maybe go a tad below the hip bone depending on your build, but the high point is meant to curve above the hip bone, and when they're scrunched down low all around, it messes with the look of the costume.
The other thing about skirt positioning...I've noticed that some people who are short (or even not!) *think* they look better/only look good with the skirt slung waaay low, but they're not necessarily right, and that's not what others see. Maybe some costume they have or had at some point looked best that way, but now they're stuck and wear everything very low. It's important to reevaluate periodically--based on your own body changes, but also from costume to costume as different costume designs may look better at different "spots," even on the same body.
Ok, off my skirt soapbox now... ;-)

Re: How low do you go?
me too ... I went through a whole phase where I was obsessed with every glute and back and any other exercise in the book that I could think of in an effort to develop even a hint of them to no avail ... though, since I started bellydancing (and doing suhaila buns) I actually have developed just the tiniest bit of definition there - which is more than I can say for anything else I ever tried (and believe me, that's everything).
... oh, and to be on topic, I wear my skirt (on the very rare occasion it comes up - I only perform at student shows)just above my tattoo in the back ... and with a slight dip in the front - which is fairly low - it's where I found the type of skirt we wear to be the most flattering on me - but it would depend on the outfit, I'm sure.

Re: How low do you go?
Actually it's gluteals.
I tend to wear my skirts pretty low, I have a long-ish torso, but longer legs, so this is more from necessity than style, otherwise my skirts would be too short.
I often see dancers with long torso and short legs wear their skirts very low, to me this looks a bit weird, as it appears as though they are mainly body. I think it is important to take a good hard look at your proportions before deciding how low to go!

Re: How low do you go?
No, gluteals is the name given to the group of muscles. Gluteus itself is Latin. The plural is glutei (unless it's fourth declension and the plural's gluteus.)

Re: How low do you go?
Gluteus, plural glutei. IANAL -- I am not a Latinist -- but I'm pretty sure it's second declension.

Re: How low do you go?
Wow, back dimples have their own website(s)! Who knew?
(Then again, I suppose everything has its own website these days, so why should this be surprising?)

Re: How low do you go?
I like to wear mine fairly low. The limiting factor is what's happening in the back. For me, raqs buttcrack starts at least an inch above raqs beaver.
