If there's no zipper, I would add heavy elastic. Long enough lengths of ribbon to hold it in place would also probably take away the stretch you need to take the skirt on and off.

I've done the elastic casing with a zipper, you just attach the elastic at either end of the zipper.

I recently purchased a costume here on Bhuz and a former owner had sewn in pieces of that rubber stuff that you can line your kitchen cupboards with. Not a bad idea.

Lauren - I wonder if those boy shorts would help a little with holding in tummy bulge and smoothing out an old surgery scar I have? Hmmmm

The ones I use sit too low to help with anything, and I'm afraid if they were high enough to hold in my tummy bulge they'd give the dreaded muffin top. It might be worth experimenting a little, though...

Can anyone post photos of how they've solved this issue? I'm having a hard time imagining how to sew the elastic into this type of skirt. I have one that is a hair too big and if I shimmy hard enough it slides right off (and takes my undies with it!).

    Thanks!

I understand what I can use. I was hoping to see some examples of how to put the elastic in this skirt. :-)

    LOL!

I'm going to try the pinning to some boyshorts technique and try dancing in it and see how that works. But curious for a more permanent solution for future costumes.

Here is a photo of my try at doing it. On the right, is the wrong way, on the left, is the right way! Just don't put the threading through the elastic!

Thanks for all your suggestions. Will try them out.

To answer a previous question, the hole in my skirt is on the plain lycra part of the skirt.

I have machine sewn my elastic into my skirts, dodging the decorated parts and making sure I don't leave an ugly, visible seam. Anyone else do that? Any reason why I shouldn't do that?

I want to revive this thread. I have a lovely and very heavy Sim costume and the skirt slips down. My upper & lower hip measurement is pretty close so there is nothing to really stop it from falling. Due to my thyroid I have gained some weight in my belly and get muffin top in just about everything.

Re: Tips Required to Prevent Skirt Falling Down

I bought back a Sim and put it on right away out of the box. It looked awesome on me. I knew it had to be tighter and more secure before a performance, so I used black elastic and sewed "X" casing with black upholstery thread, tightening the elastic as I sewed the casing in the costume. Since I have extra flesh over my bones, when I put my black bodysuit on and then the Sim skirt, I had a little muffin top…but I didn't care because would rather have a skirt stay ON when I shimmy than lose it. Will take a picture of my Sim casing and post here shortly.

That Sim you bought for your birthday is AWESOME and looks fabulous on you. I'll show you a closeup of my Sim if you show me a closeup of yours.

here is a closeup of the casing. I started by sewing the edge of the casing securely (right side of pic), then went up through the costume above the casing and back to the inside, then repeat on the bottom of the casing, repeat to the top, etc. Make SURE you don't accidentally sew through the elastic, cause you won't be able to pull the elastic tight enough. Each time my big hole embroidery needle with upholstery thread when through the costume to the other side, I would check to make sure the thread was hidden when pulled through. After I had made casing for about 6", I would pull the elastic so it was a little tight and continue my casing. When completed, I simply put a big safety pin to secure it. Many dancers would cut and sew the end of the elastic to the skirt as the beginning was sewn.

Thanks darling. This damn thyroid thing is really aggravating and makes it difficult for costuming since my weight goes up & down so often now. I really love this costume but if I can't get it to stay on then unfortunately it will have to go. I am hoping to be able to make it work.

I am like you in that there is not a lot of difference between upper and lower hip, elastic in casing works…don't give up, it's too beautiful. If you leave a safety pin, you can adjust it each time you wear it if needed.

What if you made a casing for a drawstring instead of elastic? You can get an adjustable, snug, non-slip fit out of a drawstring without the compression that elastic requires. You do have to be careful not to end up with a conspicuous, lumpy knot, though. I have one skirt that essentially has a belt made from ribbon with hooks on it on the inside of its casing to avoid the knotting problem.

Have you tried butt pads, in addition to the elastic casing? That's what I use. I have a Sim with a skirt similar to yours, and a body with slim hips and small booty. The padding definitely helps the skirt stay up and also makes the costume look more flattering on my figure. Just google it, or here is one link to get you started:

I do have a padded butt I wear with my costumes. I started wearing one about a year ago and that helps but not 100% effective.

oh so good to see you here Surida…this definitely is a keeper, so special. In fact at Rakassah West last year Tanya LV and I watched the then owner (memory loss of bhuz name here) dance in it. We both looked at each other and said "why did we ever sell that?" funny.

Hope life is treating you well Surida! miss seeing you here.

For adding elastic try Shushanna's site. She has detailed instructions and pictures. She is also fabulous about answering questions.
