New hairstyle *advice* (yes, I'm asking)

I am thinking of getting my hair done like this, but with a longer length. I've had my hair parted on the side for so long, I am scared of the parted down the middle, but I love this hair style!

It probably would end up looking more like this!

Nice enough for a professional belly dancer look?

Except for the dirt part!!! I think if you make em blunt and thick...do em up highon the forehead for a retro betty davis look. Longer...whispy and see thru....

With a strong fringe, like the one in the first photo, I think the centre parting would be less of an issue.

It's a good length, because when you do find the 3/4 fall/hairpiece of the perfect colour, you have plenty of your own hair to sweep across and mask the join.

And even the second picture looks good. When I do "tousled" it just looks like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards, on her it looks dead glam!

Have you tested out whether or not a fringe would suit you? A good way to try is go to a wig store (again!) and try holding a length of hair close to your own shade against your forehead as if it were a fringe, see how it looks. You might be able to try it with your own hair too, if it's long enough.

I think this style is pretty but it's quite "soccer mom" at the length shown, especially in its dirty curly mode. Longer will be good!

If you have never had bangs, you should remember that they require more maintenance than normal hair. They need frequently trimmed.

Also, the hair will be against your forehead. Sometimes, that causes breakouts.

I know this isn't the advice you wanted, but I think if you're working towards being a pro, upkeep and your skin are definitely things you'll want to keep in mind

consider the bangs option very carefully. I think you look good without them. Bangs work against the exotic belly dancer look, IMO. Some people pull it off, but as a general rule, it does tend to add to the office hair or soccer mom hair look.

Also, bangs subtract from the thickness of the rest of your hair. My hair is not overly thick and I don't want to spare any of that thickness for bangs.

If your final objective is to have long hair, I would bite the bullet and grow it out with *minimal* trims. As in, dusting 1/8 inch off no more than every 8 weeks to get rid of split ends. If you do this, your hair could be 6 inches (or more) longer in a year.

In general, it has been my experience that hair stylists are the enemy of long hair. If you can find one that understands and respects your desire to grow your hair out, great. But most will chop off at least 1/2 inch even if you tell them that you are trying to grow your hair out. Your hair probably grow about 1/2 inch per month, so if you get it cut and styled every 6 weeks, you are losing most of your growth.

I think it best to determine your face shape first and decide if fringe will work for you.
    Face Shape & Flattering Cuts

I have a different take on fringe. In addition to your face shape, how fringe will look on you will best be determined by hair thickness. If you do have thick hair (and the appropriate face shape), fringe can look quite exotic and give your hair a thicker appearance because of the "bluntness" of fringe that is cut across the forehead. It will also depend on how much hair is used to create the fringe. Generally, blunt cuts will give the appearance of thicker hair, as opposed to layers.

Fringe definitely brings attention to the eyes.

A close friend of mine who dances had long hair parted in the middle for a very long time. I gave her a fringe and she definitely looked more exotic and sexy than before. She even got tired of her long hair and now has a Louise Brooks (blunt cut bob w/ bangs)...

I like my bangs - I think about growing them out, but in a weird way I think my face looks too big and pale without them. I think my bangs look better when performing if I'm wearing a costume-coordinated headband (with the added bonus of keeping my hair from sticking to my sweaty face and neck). Like here:

    Andalee,
I think those stong bangs are too harsh for your face shape, I'd love to see you with an elongated bang, not so straight across. Take a look at this cut, it is very similar to what you've chosen, but the bang is much softer.
    http://www.bhuz.com/file/pic/gallery/18294.jpg
This cut is wonderful for growing out. And if you do go with some "spare hair," it will blend in easily as this cut gets longer and longer. You can skip months of cuts as you are trying to grow out length because of the layering. This cut flips both in and out. Styling is fan freakin tasticly easy too. Upside blow drying with ionic blower til nearly dry- 6 mins tops, right side up blowing with your hand to guide the flips in or out or loose- about 2 mins, then run over the whole thing in wide sections with a wide barrel high heat curling iron to smooth out your natural curls, into a flip up, in or random. Super quick, about 20 seconds each section, just til hot to the touch, and release. Maybe 5 more mins. You could also hit it with a straightening iron to get it sleek, or go choppy for a change of look. I also would love to see you with some lighter blonde highlights. See how this cut has some height on the back? Great for you, and gives a glam look with no trouble at all, just a couple touches of back combing, a spritz of spray, and you're golden.

Last time I had fringe I was 12 or 13 and I had a perm. BAD LOOK. ;D

My hair is very thick, but very fine. It is also half-wavy, half-straight. I guess my face is somewhere between round and heart-shaped.

I was thinking side-swept thin bangs, until I saw Quantum of Solace and I loved the hair!

Going to new stylist soon. It's been since August since the last time I had my hair cut. Quite shameful, really.

They can be a bit of a bear too keep up, but I trim my own between cuts so it's no big deal. A lot of hairdressers will do bang trims for free between cuts if you're a regular customer, too.

    Thank you!

Andalee, I can relate to the whole "my hair is fine yet thick at the same time" thing. You mean the individual strands are slippery and thin, but you have a ton of them, right?

When I had short hair a few years ago, my stylist used to have to thin it out tremendously or else it began to look like a bush growing from the top of my head! ..l;,

I've had bangs for a year now, and I'm thinking of letting them grow out again. I change my look every now and then. They look good on me, though, and I think they're very feminine and glam.

One tip for maintaining them during the week is to shampoo your bangs between hair washes. You can't let them get too sweaty or else they'll look greasy and gross. I use a round brush and hairdryer to style them; it takes less than two minutes. When they're stubborn, I use the flat-iron for certain effects.

On a positive note, when you've got bangs, you don't have to worry about your eyebrows as much, if they're long enough. That's my one true plus!

Absolutely true. I no longer let my hairdresser trim my ends any more. Only my bangs. When I perform, I use hairspray to move my bangs up and off my forehead.

I may never get a salon haircut again. My hair is now long enough that I can get the back pieces in front of my eyes to trim the ends off. From the long hair community forum I learned an easy way to maintain my v-shaped hemline. It isn't rocket science.

I also don't care for the way hairdressers rip through your hair with the combs and brushes, and then hold the hot hair dryer one inch from the vent brush as they pull pull pull. You can't do that when you are trying to grow long hair; you have to detangle very carefully and avoid anything that causes unnecessary breakage.

I think the way the cut looks (model helps) in the first pic is HOT!! I love it! It's exotic to me! But yeah, make sure it works for your face shape & hair type. But I love it, it's refreshing.

Oh my goodness - I was just going to suggest this look for you:

Kind of close to the fourth hairstyle you tried! (though a little longer - who knows, they may have put extensions in for her) I think the side part really works for your face shape. I've been a side-part girl all my life and, you know, we are twins, so I've thought this over. Plus you have some nice wave in your hair (whereas mine is stick straight) so the first style you posted in your OP just isn't going to look like that with your hair (as you pointed out).

Fourth one or second one (which is essentially the fourth one with the fringe allowed to hang) IMO.

If you do choose a fringe/bang that is heavy and blunt, I would consider going above the eyebrows. Brow-length closes in your face.

From what I've seen in photos you don't look to have any hairline issues that could affect a fringe, but do take into account the direction of your hairline. If your hair grows back or even sideways you may have difficulty getting a fringe to sit right.

Gawd she is hot. And I love the hair...but I feel like I've been doing variations of that my whole life. I feel like I need to branch out. But clearly the one that is most flattering is the closest to the one I have now. Go figure. For you ladies on bhuz, you always see my hair pulled back....this is what it looks like down:

I like the way your hair looks down, instead of being pulled back abruptly from the forehead as in the dance pictures I've seen of you. I think if you wear it down, maybe fluff it up with curls and hair spray, and grow it out a bit longer, you'll have a winner. Maybe use some sparkly accessories in the hair such as a headband, but leave your bangs down.

I think the pulled-back-from-the-forehead look that I've seen in your dance photos gives you too much of a wholesome schoolgirl look which is at odds with "glamorous dancer".

I'm thinking that a neat fringe of bangs like the first picture you posted wouldn't work for you - I think the shape of your face is too round to look good with those.

I really dislike my bangs but I don't have the patience to grown them out. The negatives are that I can't wear hats in the winter because they smooch the bangs down against my forehead. During the summer, my forehead breaks out and my bangs get oily and icky from sweat. They also flip weirdly if it's humid out. The positives are...hmmm...they cover up the wrinkles on my forehead. I can't think of any other positives! Wow, I do need to grow them out!

Andalee, have you tried shifting your parting up a little? Not to centre but higher than where you currently wear it? That could give you a look that is quite different but still flattering. Or, try the opposite and take it lower. OR, try switching sides. See what happens.

I think that off centre is probably going to be most flattering on you because you have a broad face with quite a strong jawline, and dead centre may create a harder, harsher look than you deserve.

WRT keeping the hair out of your eyes when dancing - this is where a fall could come in handy, because I think you could probably carry off combing your hair *straight* back from your forehead, holding it in place with a band that's not too far back, and having the rest of the hair big and full behind, falling softly forward to frame your face. Easiest way to achieve that is with a good fall. Very 60s look.

Another thing that might make you feel "fresh" hairwise but still yourself are some foil lowlights in chocolate or copper, which will add some texture and depth to your (natural?) golden blonde. You want a *really* good colourist though. Keep the lightness round your face.
