spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
Hey there, if you have time, can you take a gander at some of my pictures on my website gallery and give me some makeup tips? On stage I think I'm okay, but I tend to either go too light or too heavy in restaurant, I feel like... ugh. I have gone to the MAC counter & had my makeup done, but in photos it looked over done (or maybe not the best colors) to me. I see some of your photos out there in bhuzland and they are so....glam. Maybe I just need to stick with "cute" as I doubt I have the personality for "sex kitten" but I do want to look the best I can.
I appreciate any advice ..g.:
Oh, here's the site link to the gallery.

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
I don't see any huge issues. There are a few pics that it looks like you might need a little more conceler under your eyes but that could be a lighting issue. In some of them, in my opnion (and I am NO Azhia) the dark under your eyes is a bit much. Perhaps it only looks that way in porportion to what you have on top. I also didn't see a whole lot of color.
Now, I say all of this and please take into account that I would love to get my make up looking that way!

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
Wow! those are some fabulous photos! I really know very little about make-up, so I can't even comment there. However, I also have trouble with runny lower mascara and liner. I've found using a liner pencil (although that may be a no-no, I have no clue) just on the lower lid runs less. I've also found a Clinique waterproof mascara that I like. It doesn't give the fab volume or length that other mascaras do, but at least it stays where you put it! Here's a link:
Clinique | Makeup | Mascara | Lash Power Mascara Long Wearing Formula
I also tend to use brown colours, and find it less noticeable as they start migrating down my face than when I wear blacks and greys.

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
you are ADORABLE!....if you haven't gotten azhia's DVD yet, go for it, it's AWESOME!
well from my perspective, and azhia is MUCH better at this.......it looks like for stage n bright lights that can wash you out, more blush and MAYBE some contouring under the cheekbone, but there definitely doesn't seem to be any in the pics....the apples of the cheeks look unblushed.....do you use false eyelashes? that would allow you to use less liner, AND make your eyes pop.....which may also help with the smudge issue.....i have that too.................for more intimate venues like restaurants..........i wispier lash (but dark) and a slimmer or smudged liner would give the same effect, but without looking heavy............it looks pretty good for the most part....nice color choices, just slightly more oomph....it looks like your eyes may be deepset, like mine,....are they? creating a higher 'crease' helps that, as does bringing color up and out from the outer corner, which is a neat trick azhia showed me
don't worry about glam..........it's not sex kitten, it's you, just more va-voom............

ooh, I didn't know about the dvd! I will get it! I do use false lashes, every time I dance...my lashes are not thick, naturally, and my eyes are my best feature. I use blush, but it probably isn't enough..I'm pretty shy with the blush.

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
Get her dvd. I like how Azhia will talk about the tonal qualities in the eye makeup rather than confusing it with all the fancy colour tricks (though she does explain that you can replace the different tonal elements with colour).
For really popping eyes you need contrast and I know one of my problems is that if I don't prep around and under my eye properly the build up of dark makeup I need to make my eye stand out can sometimes make it look a bit muddy.
I help that by spending most of my time doing my base, my eye will have eye cream, MAC painterly where I am fixing my smokey eye, an all over neutral matt colour, then I work in the tonals and as advised by azhia working from light to dark without working it too far up to my brow as that seems to give me a muddy eye (my eyes are a little close together so I put my darkest bits toward the outside of my eye and highlight the inside... azhia's dvd advises on the best look for each type of eye also), then a white liner to the inside rims at the bottom, then shade my brow, then lashes (the MAC counter showed me how but azhia's dvd also instructs on that), the liquid liner on top lid line. After all that I work the concealer under my eye blending it up into any colour I have lining my lower lid... I know putting the concealer on last is a little backward but it seems to be the only thing to prevent a muddy look for me... I just really need to keep that under eye area bright and highlighted for a dark eye to work on me.
Also shine is a big problem for me, it's like oily shine kills carefully planned contrasts in your makeup by shining up even darkened areas, using a matt product that reduces shine has helped me.Last edited by NandaDncer; 01-26-2009 at 08:31 PM. Reason: added some stuff

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
Ooo and also... learn how to use a eyelash curler, they do wonders to open the eye. And check out azhia's thread "apricot for all" for tips on applying cream blush. I tried a cream blush and apricot coloured blush for the first time after that thread and was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. If you don't want to put too much colour into your cheeks there is also techniques for contouring and highlighting that can be used in addition to a little colour... which I believe azhia's dvd also talks about.

Shoot, you are cute as a button.
With your youthful face, you might be wise to be shy about using too dark or intense of a palette. Have you tried using a more "retro" look? (I'm thinking Audrey Hepburn or Bettie Page.) A matte face, a full lipline with a rich red color, false lashes/ heavier eyeliner on the top lid, a fairly neutral lid color, and strong brows to frame the eyes. Definitely "done", but not "heavy", you know?

Remember to darken/define your eye brows -- they help express emotion -- don't hide them! (It's also one of the best things you can do for normal day wear too, but it's often overlooked)

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
like i said you are adorable and i def. think you could pull of the 'sex kitten' look (w/o being too 'in your face' of course)
i, however, cannot pull of any sexy look whatsoever which is y i make the WORST 'model' ever during photoshoots. i just don't have the 'look'. those poor photographers...lol
oh and azhia's dvd helps a bunch :)

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
I have been blessed with dark undereyes so I forgo mascara and liner on my lower lashes/lids (or use a very light application of liner) and I go much heavier on the top lashes and lids, of course using false lashes and black eyeliner and eyeshadow. Always groom your brows (though yours look great already) and use a good quality concealer only where it's darkest. If I just concentrate on that part I don't look to 'whited out' under my eyes.

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
I could see a clean, retro 1950s eye look on you - fairly neutral shadow with with a strong, winged out line on the sides. Not the stylized ancient Egyptian look, more glam. Like Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn. Also, darken your eyebrows a touch. I used to avoid this because I thought my dark eyebrows were "enough" but it really does help. And I'd go for a brighter lipstick. It doesn't have to be deep red, but it could pop a little more. I think you can actually go for a bit of a sex kitten look, but too much could overwhelm your delicate features.

I think you look really pretty.
what if you played around with your hairstyle instead of the makeup? maybe something sleek and straight could make for a polished, sophisticated vibe, rather than girlish curls.

..l;,..l;,..l;, I'm laughing hard because my natural hairstyle is so straight, I have to coat it with hairspray to get the curls to stick.... I guess the grass is truly greener, for me. I've always envied curly hair. But, I see your point...sometimes I go a bit overboard with the curls & look a little like a 30 year old Shirley Temple... ..g.:..g.:..g.:

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
Here's some links:
The first two are Audrey; the second link actually has several suggested makeup schemes.
The Glam Guide: Audrey Hepburn Makeup: Step by Step Guide
The Fabulous Audrey Hepburn News: Audrey Hepburn makeup tips
As for Bettie, you can't search the Internet without tripping over her pics, but a quick Google search picked out this pic, which is actually of Gretchen Mol in The Notorious Bettie Page, but it's a good example.
http://ferdyonfilms.com/Bettie%20Page%201.jpg
Note that the emphasis isn't on color, but on definition. A very defined lip, lash, and brow line in simple, clean colors. For example, when I do this kind of makeup, I use a true red with a matte finish on my lips, true black on my lash line, false lashes that are longer at the outside corner, a touch of rose blush, and a cameo/ballet pink with a peach undertone on my lids. I also make sure to use a matte finish powder all over my face.Last edited by kulthum; 01-28-2009 at 11:27 PM.

Awesome, Kulthum, thanks. I love MAC blotting powder for a matte finish...something I just started using several months ago. Unfortunately, like a lot of MAC products, it tends to clog my pores. But for a performance, it's okay.

I am no make-up artist but for excellent base and concealer and powder I use Alexis Vogel make-up, I also really love her lash-lock and waterproof mascara. It doesn't clog my pores and I have sensitive skin. You could check out the whole line at makeupconnction.com.

You are beautiful!
I think you would see a world of difference if you defined your eyebrow a bit more. Since your eyes are so so pretty the eyebrows provide a nice frame. Your eyebrows seem to fade away on the outer corners in pictures. You might want to give that a spin.
Also, it might be fun to try out some more matte shades of shadow instead of the frosty/shimmery colors. I find that matte colors are safer in different lighting and even in snap shots.
Maybe a little more color on the lip for a change too? You know, for special occasions.
Like I said, so pretty! And brave to open yourself up to suggestions. Happy dancing!

Re: spinoff from Can't Compete--makeup, folks
LOL!!! that really *is* funny. you did such a good job at curling your hair that I it was your natural mode. I gues what I was getting at is that artificial, I-pay-to-look-this-way styling generally reads as more adult (to me anyhow) than the natural look. ...
But that is really not how your hair looks, eh? Too funny!!! The things we do to ourselves in the name of glamour. If you want puffy hair, I would be happy to swap scalps with you!
