Mineral makeup for performing?
I've decided to update my makeup "wardrobe" this year and I have a question about foundations for performance. As I was a MK consultant for a little while (stopped a couple months ago but was finishing off some foundation and stuff I had) that was the bulk of what I used and now I find myself feeling a bit lost.
I need a new foundation and if possible, would like one that would work for both performing and daily wear. I have normal skin but larger pores around my nose and since I'm revamping everything, am going for new skincare stuff as well (suggestions welcome). Sometime in the next two weeks I'm going to take a trip to Atlanta to the nearest Sephora to try out some things that I'm not comfortable just buying online and one of those things is the BE mineral makeup.
So, for those of you who use it... do you use it for both daily wear and performance? If you have larger pores in an area of your face, does it cover them or make you look older? Does the mineral makeup actually stay on? Is BE the best option or are there others? Would it be okay to use the liquid concealer I have (Stila - love it!) with the mineral makeup or would I have to hope their stuff works?
I know it's a lot to ask, but I figured I'd do some research here to help me figure out exactly what I want to ask when I'm trying everything out.
Thanks so much!

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
i've used mineral make-up for performance for almost a year, and it DOES stay on, pores arent much of an issue, especially if you get the matte formulas
HOWEVER.........since i started using face atalier for performance, i never went back.......the finish is wonderful, silicon based, so good for your skin, pretty good with pores, and HOLDS UP...........
i still use minerals for everyday, since it looks so natural and is better for my skin, but always face atalier for performance

The BE stuff made me look 10 years older and all shimmery like a sad disco ball. ..c:: I just got Laura Geller's balance brighten and really like, but I don't think it is a true mineral foundation. Is MAC's? I soooooo second the face atelier. If you use a lotion moisturizer or sunscreen, you can mix it into that to make a tinted moisturizer for everyday use too.

I use MAC's mineral foundation for everyday and for performing (ecsepcially when it's hot out). It always does the trick for me and makes me look flawless.

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
I use mineral powder on its own for daily wear, but for performing, I use liquid foundation and powder it down with the mineral powder. I use Physician's Formula mineral powder, which you can buy at the drugstore.

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
I've been using Bare Minerals foundation (and mineral veil) for daily wear and when performing (except when I'm having a really really bad face day), and I think I look alright, but then I don't know about a stage setting. I may look into that atalier stuff that was mentioned in the previous posts, for now I'm happy with mineral makeup. I feel so much cleaner. My skin is super pale, and although the mineral makeup may be a half shade too dark, it looks more natural than the liquid foundations I've used in the past.

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
i like mineral powder makeup for daily wear. it even stays on through a whole workout at the gym.
the mineral makeup colors are very pretty and would probably be fine for gigs in natural light, close to the audience.
however for stage, i like mac because the pigments are brighter and they create more of a "stage" face and hold up under stage lighting.

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
If you dislike Bare Minerals, may I recommend you try some other brands? I love both:
Aromaleigh
Aromaleigh Mineral Cosmetics & Aromatics: Pure Mineral Makeup: Creatively & affordably formulated with the finest quality mineral pigments.
and Everyday Minerals
http://www.everydayminerals.com
I prefer the pigments in the shadows in Everyday Minerals, but love both for their foundations. They have many different formulations for different skin types and preferences (so if you looked shiny, try a different formulation with a different company and you will be pleased, I am certain). Remember, less is definitely more in mineral make-up.
I go back and forth between my mineral makeup foundation and my Smashbox foundation for performance. I get more coverage from my liquid foundation, so I prefer it for stage performance where I want to get a "blank slate" and really use more blush and eye make-up to maximize impact. Up close my mineral makeup works just fine.

If your are looking for really good quality and not spending a fortune, check out Coastal Scents: they are amazing! 88 piece pallette for 21.95$ us they have tons of mica and minerals and glitters too.
But what is really fun is that you can buy a sample of different mineral foundations to see if they work for you or not.

Thanks TribalDancer! I'll have to find somewhere that sells these brands, I'm terrible at picking out the right colors online. I need someone to tell me what to pick. :-)

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
I use everyday minerals for, well, everyday looks. For stage, I use Ben Nye cake foundation. This is because I get really red in the face and it's the only thing I can find that covers it (I use it with a wet makeup sponge). I'd be interested in Face Atelier and I noticed there's a shop sorta near me that sells it. If it's pigmented enough I'd switch over. the cake makeup is drying and not 100% natural looking.

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
Sorry to report these are small companies that do not sell in stores, only online. BUT Everyday Minerals has fantastic FREE samples with just the cost of shipping! You get three sample size foundations, a sample blush, and a sample concealer. That is how I found my shade!
Aromaleigh sells mini samples of everything they make, just enough to get a taste, at around $1 per sample.
So try them out!

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
For up close shows I use a primer, then Aromaleigh mineral foundation on top. For stage shows I use a primer, Lorac oil free foundation and Aromaleigh mineral foundation on top. I would NOT use Bare Essentials for performance, it has a shine to it and photographs as an oil slick or sweat.
I also use Aromaleigh eye shadows, applied with a sealant (my Eye Kandy sealer at the moment), allowed to dry, and then more eyeshadow brushed on top dry and blended. (TribalDancer - have you seen her new Bette Noir collection? Yum!)
I went to Aromaleigh's color chart and then ordered 4 or 5 foundation samples in what I thought would be my color, and then applied them and looked at them in natural daylight. The one that "disappeared" is the one I went for. For regular wear that's light coverage I'll mix a little of the foundation in with my moisturizer to tint it, then apply. This is also nice for times (like now!) when my skin is dry.

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
Yes, I adore the colors from Aromaleigh. But I find they go on so very light and fade quickly--weak pigments. Even with a great shadow foundation, even with all the tricks I tried. Everyday Minerals, though, has stronger pigments going on and last longer. They don't have as many eye shadow colors, nor the wilder colors I love from Aromaleigh, but they have staying power.

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
The glow works on me just great, so that is what I use. I have been experimenting with the Intensive lately to get more coverage, but I find the difference to be minimal. So if you want matte, get something as matte as possible, then you can add shimmer in places you want it when you want it, with your blushes and shadows.
In my Aromaleigh, they are very matte. So I actually get a light tawny blush color that has some glow to it, and I mix the two. It gives me a lightly warmer complexion and the glow I want. Not many people realize that the real magic and fun in mineral makeup is the ability to mix formulas, colors, etc like a little scientist!!

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
I'm a BE girl through and through. I wear Bare Minerals for everyday wear and for performance. I make a few modifications to my makeup routine when I'm prepping for performance. Caveat: I am not a makeup artist, but my best friend is a licensed esthetician and used to work for BE, so pretty much everything I know about makeup, I learned from her. :)
1. For everyday wear, I just use the foundation powder all over, and then conceal with more foundation powder by applying it to problem areas with the concealer brush. For stage, before I apply foundation all over, I apply their Bisque on my eye circles, my eyelids, around the creases of my nose, and on any blemishes. Then I go over it with foundation all over.

2. For everyday wear, I just apply eye shadow directly to the eye. For performance, I first prep my eyelid with BE's Prime Time Eyelid Primer. This makes the shadow colors more intense when I apply them, and it makes them really stick. No matter how much I sweat or rub my eyes, the powder stays put, and doesn't crease or fade. It won't come off until you scrub it off at the end of the day.

3. For everyday wear, I mix the liner shadows with water to make a liquid liner. For performance, I mix the liner shadows with BE's Weather Everything, which is a liquid that makes the makeup waterproof. It won't budge. If you already have the Eye Kandy Liquid Sugar, you can substitute that instead of the Weather Everything, and it works just as well.

4. For performance, I just make it a point to apply more of everything. More foundation, more Warmth, more eye powder, more blush, more True.
5. The only non-BE makeup in my whole makeup collection is my lipstick. I've always used Cover Girl's Outlast Lip Stain with great results, so I've never really felt like exploring BE's offerings in that area. :)

Re: Mineral makeup for performing?
OK, I realized that even in "fair" the Laura Gellar was too dark for me. I guess I need "vampiric". So I just got MAC's mineralized skinfinish in light. Very similar finish - just slightly less "dewy", and the color match is great! Even though it contains the word "mineralized", I don't think it is a true mineral finish. Love this stuff. I'm wondering how this would look performing or photographed at a low key gig?

Is your complexion good? If it is, what about just a tinted moisturizer? It will be light coverage, but it won't give you potential issues with clogged pores. If a tinted moisturizer isn't an option then a powder foundation (like a mineral foundation) is your best bet. I can't vouch for BE make-up because I've never tried it.
