De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
I'm sure this issue has already been addressed but I'm bringing it up again. I have several silk veils that are in desperate need of being de-wrinkled. I have tried lightly steaming them wiht my iron and it did not work. Any suggestions for the best way to do this? Also best way to store them to keep them from wrinkling again. Thanks!

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
I hang mine over a shower curtain rod, spritz down to damp (but not soaked) with water out of a spray bottle, and let dry. In about 30 minutes, my veils are dry with little to no wrinkles left.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
You can also hang them in the bathroom while you take a nice, hot, steamy shower.
I've found that putting them in the dryer for a 15 min "fluff" helps a little.
For travel to gigs, I gently and loosely "stuff" them in a bag by themselves.
Silk veils are tricky, but thankfully the lights are usually dimmed a little at my regular gigs! ;-) These days I try to find veils that have a watercolour look or colour gradient because the wrinkles don't show up as much.
Good luck with this on-going struggle.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
I actually . . . uh . . .IRON my silk veils, on medium setting on my iron. It's a dreadful pain to do but once done, if I fold the veil over just enough times to be able to hang it up on a clip hanger, After that will stay looking good even if I use it, as long as I keep putting it right back on the hanger.
I'm interested in this shower curtain method though. Must try it. I have an oversized veil 54" wide that I've allowed to go get all crumpled up and I've been dreading ironing it.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
Rosette, I used to iron mine too before I learned the trick from Shaia. It is soooooo much easier, and is a regular part of my "getting ready" routine. Hang the veil and spray it, then by the time my makeup and hair are done, it's dry and I'm ready to go.
I stuff all my silk veils, unfolded into a dresser drawer because unwrinkling them is a snap with this trick.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
I hang mine in the bathroom for a few showers so the steam does all the work for me. Sometimes I really don't mind wrinkles though.
As for traveling, I roll mine in a towel. It helps with storing it in my luggage and keeps it from getting anything on it in case something spills in my dance bag.

Thanks for the tips! I like the shower rod one the best. I actually ironed a couple this last weekend but took too long.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
I iron mine on the hottest setting with maximum steam. |It will not hurt them. If your wrinkles are too set in even for that, wet it down completely with a spray bottle and iron it dry.
A couple of decades ago, the hot setting on irons was often labeled "cotton/silk". I don't know where the idea came from that silk is delicate.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
ironing will get your veils as smooth as glass, but for me they end up too slick and slippery that way - it changes their float and the way they work around my body. the misting with water method doesn't seem to mess with them that way; also, the misted veils still have a bit of texture to them so if you are a veil tucker/draper, the wrinkles from tucking won't be as stark as on an ironed veil.

Mine has the cotton/silk label. I iron them with that and it works beautifully. I don't mind doing it while I watch TV. You couldn't pay me to iron my regular clothes though.
Elisa, I noticed the same thing, after ironing them, I have to dance with them a bit to get them back to working normally.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
When I want to finish off a veil I have painted, I iron it damp. That is to say the veil is damp, and no steam from the iron, iron smoothly until the silk is dry, then move on to the next section.
My own veil however, I deliberately keep a bit rumpled and call it a feature ;)

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
I throw mine in a dryer on low with a damp towel. But, they do get static without a dryer sheet, which can leave residue. I'm going to try the shower curtain rod trick next time.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
Tried spraying mine on the shower rod yesterday, and it got out about 95% of the wrinkles. Thanks for the tip!! Now I just need a bigger shower.

Re: De-Wrinkling Silk Veils
I have an iron that has a built-in steamer function (and retractable cord!) that works great for getting the wrinkles out of my silk veils and my chiffon skirts. I have faithfully used only distilled water in it.
It's very similar to this one: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002P685KE/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?ie=UTF8&cloe_id=516ed6b1-df41-428d-a931-2bc3e2f69db7&attrMsgId=LPWidget-A1&pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000GVY568&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX 0DER&pf_rd_r=0W05HH77PE7BF43MMFGC]Amazon.com: Sunbeam 4233 Steam Master Iron with Retractable Cord: Kitchen & Dining[/ame]
