Cleaning up old coins?
Hi - does anyone have experience cleaning off that greenish tinge that old bronze coins get? They are on a costume that I'm relining for a friend, and I don't want to remove them. Would a silver polishing cloth work or is there a solution I should use. I'm afraid that I'll ruin the coin and turn it black which will look worse than the natural effect of age on old bronze coins.

Re: Cleaning up old coins?
This is how i get tarnish off.
you will need: oven mitts, or pot holders, tongs, mixing spoon. large pyrex or glass bowl, aluminum foil, hot water and baking soda.
Put aluminum foil sheet on bottom of pyrex shiny side up. pour hot water add 2 TBS baking soda, stir then with tongs or long tweezers
place coins in dish it will take a bit of time to get the crud/oxidation off. flip coins to do both sides when tarnish is off cookie tray with paper towel to let coins dry and cool. The potholders/oven mitts is because the water has to be pyrex dish is extremely hot and glass conducts heat.
It won't harm you or the environment.
Its similar to a as seen on TV product "white lightening" same thing but cheaper.

Re: Cleaning up old coins?
There was a thread about this a while back. The two remedies which many of us talked about also raised some eyebrow - Taco Bell Hot Sauce or Ketchup.
the things you never knew. . .

2 parts water, 1 part lemon juice and baking soda (1 tsp for every 1/2 cup of solution) make sure you mix it in a large bowl because the acid/baking soda gets bubbly and expands. Also vinegar/salt mixtures are very good at cleaning and polishing brass, but it leaves a salad dressing smell for a long time.
