Shape of Veil?
Out of habit I've always used rectangular veils but now im considering a semi circular veil, aside from shape what is the difference? Is one better for certain moves than the other? Thanks!

Re: Shape of Veil?
I like both shapes, and I have a collection of veils in each type.
There are a lot of veil moves that work equally well with either design.
There are SOME veil moves that work best with one shape or the other.
Semicircular veils are best for double veil, one-handed veil work, and toreador-like cape work.
It's hard to describe the moves that I find work best with rectangular veils because they don't have standard names.
I recommend that you go ahead and equip yourself with a circular veil, and then play with it. Try all your usual moves, and you'll soon figure out which ones looked better with rectangles versus which look better with semicircles versus which look just fine with BOTH shapes.

Re: Shape of Veil?
half circles can work better in small spaces.
not as many corners to whack people with :)

Re: Shape of Veil?
certain "tricks" (wraps etc) don't work well with semi-circular veils because you need the corners.

Semi circle veils look particularly good with one-handed spiraling spins :)

Re: Shape of Veil?
In my experience, a circular (or semi-circular veil to be more accurate) is better for faster, tighter veil manipulations that require more precision. They're also good if you are in a small space and easier to work with one hand, as others have mentioned. I tend to think of rectangular veils as for use in larger spaces and more flowy veil work, if that makes sense. Rectangular veils can be used for the smaller, tighter veil moves, so they are overall more versatile, but they're also more to handle, IMO.

Re: Shape of Veil?
Has anyone here used a 3/4 circle veil?
Saw one for sale one day and wondered how that would work.

Re: Shape of Veil?
what do you mean by 3/4? 3/4 of a circle? wouldn't that look a little weird? i've never seen one used for dance in any case.... mind be an interesting idea to try, even if just to know whether or not it'd work

Re: Shape of Veil?
if i had a gig, tonight, i'd reach for a four yard light silk veil rectangle that i'd wear as a drape or criss crossed about the neck and tucked into the hips, and then have the double silk veils (but i'm not minimalist hehe)
just for plain ole silk veil dancing (oh smack me for saying plain) i go with a longer rectangle every time :)

Re: Shape of Veil?
Yes, I use 3/4 for my double veil work, here is a video clip,

I also sell them, they are made out of tissue lame, so they move fast, I could never do percussive fast veil work with silk, I save silk for my slower veil pieces.

Re: Shape of Veil?
Hi, Aradia! Wow, your double veil is incredible! I'm interested in the dimensions of the veils -- are they 2-1/2 yards long? 45" wide at the widest point? I love the way they overlap at the ends when you're spinning. I've tried doing semi-circular veil with a 3 yard x 54" wide veil -- more like a cape than a veil, and sometimes a little overwhelming, even for me at 5'7". Doubling that is more than a little intimidating...

Re: Shape of Veil?
I want a pair to play with! Those are stunning; thank you for sharing the clip.
How did 3/4 veils come to be? You are the only person I've heard of who uses them (as well as the tissue lame; everyone else is always silk or chiffon).

Re: Shape of Veil?
I was introduced to 3/4 veils when I was 12 years old from Marta Schills, she taught a choreography using one, so I started playing around with 2 of them and taught myself to do double veil. I will eventually get a double veil DVD released teaching techniques that can be used for double veils of any fabric, but again, I prefer lame for speed, but if you watch my performance on BD-TV Vol 3, I used 2 silk 1/2 veils I got from Jessenia.
And Jess, I can have my lady make them in 2 colors, so you could have a veil that is turq-pink-turq. I usually just use 2 different colors, in the clip I used one silver and one gold. I have them in gold, silver, red, purple, green, royal blue, turq and pink.
