American Icon?
Wondering if anyone currently has or has previously owned any of the American Icon sets on Dahlal? I really like the look (American Icon II in particular) & am thinking this might work well for bellygrams specifically - plus could be easily paired with different colored skirts & sleeves, and of course shoes. But would it look cheesy or student-ish? I guess it could, especially if dancing like a student..I dunno, I'm second guessing myself ladies, help!
Opinions on the costume & alternate suggestions are welcomed!

Re: American Icon?
I previously had the american icon 2 set. I don't think they look like a student costume, especially if you pair them with the right skirt and accessories. They seem to be just what the gp would be expecting for bellygrams and such.

Re: American Icon?
I know at least three people in my area who have one and I have only heard rave reviews so far. They seem well crafted and they're tremendously versatile, so they offer pretty good "bang" for the buck! They look like a nice choice for those occasions when you know your audiences will expect a Classic Bellydancer look.
If you're looking for an ultra-classy look, try pairing it with some sort of trumpet skirt and skinny sleeves.

Re: American Icon?
I've been wanting one of these myself. Do you know if the coins tarnish? or turn green?

Re: American Icon?
Thank you ladies! Guess I know what I'll be ordering soon *yay* Though I like the modern sets with skinny stretchy skirts, I've always gravitated toward the "classic" look, and have been eyeing that set for while. Now that I've made up my mind to get back into performing, I have a reason to order it, lol. I think it'd give a lot of bang for the buck; seems pretty versatile.

Re: American Icon?
I have two of them in silver and gold - they are perfect for bellygrams and gp gigs, and look really good with the right accessories. I love that classic look, too. Mine both tend to shed a lot of coins, but there are so many on there, it doesn't seem to make any difference. My coins haven't changed color and I've had them over 3 years.

If you're looking for one that's "ready to wear," I noticed a couple on DancingRahana.com. Sometimes, you just gotta sparkle, like, right now! ..g.:

Re: American Icon?
I don't own one, but I have seen lots of them in person, and I would own one.
If you haven't seen one in person, be prepared for the fact that the fabric under the coins is cheap-o lamé (I think) and the coins themselves are VERY chintzy, lightweight and small. They do seem to shed a lot.
In other words, don't expect to get more than you're paying for and you won't be disappointed.
They are VERY versatile and flattering and present that classic bellydancer look. It's a totally different costume paired with a floaty chiffon skirt set or a sleek lycra trumpet skirt, so you can get a lot of use out of it. And it's not hard to sew coins back on, either, if you start developing bald spots.

Re: American Icon?
I have an American Icon II, and I haven't actually performed in it yet, but it's next on my rotation for the restaurant or GP gigs. It is flattering and versatile, and for the price, it was worth it to me, just to get something else into the rotation. It doesn't look like my $600-$900 costumes, but I wouldn't expect it to at that price point. The fabric underneath is very cheap lame, and there was some work to be done right away (such as reinforcing the straps- they were pretty much just the unlined lame with the threads holding the coins on totally open. Some grosgrain, and now those threads are covered and the straps are stronger and more supportive (I'm a D, so all about support). It isn't one of my fancy costumes, but for a slower restaurant night, belly gram-type of gig, or outdoor performance, I'm glad to have it.
