Shampoo woes! A good one?
My scalp is finicky I think...I get greasy hair if I don't shampoo daily, dry scalp if I do, and build up regardless. The result is limp hair. I have fine but thick hair that is stick-straight.
Anybody have a shampoo they really like? I use Aussie right now, I trade out often. I love tea tree shampoos, but tried Jason and hated it. I've tried several salon brands but didn't like them (or the price tag).

I second Andalee's recommendation of Garnier Fructis. My hair gets greasy too but the Garnier seems to strike a good balance between clean and overclean for me.

Sonja, you should try products from the Dead Sea. It really helps. I have the same problem as you. I use this shampoo:
Sea of Spa Black Mud Shampoo enriched with Obliphica oil Seabuckthorn

I 3rd Garnier Fructis. My hairdresser says it's the best on the market of readily available products and I tend to agree.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
I've used the rosemary mint, it didn't work for me after a while. I guess no matter how good something is it builds up. I bought some fructis today...keeping fingers crossed.

I find that diluting my shampoo works really well - it clears the oil off my scalp without over-drying my scalp or my hair.

I 4th Garnier Fructis. Love it! Those other ones sound great too, but Garnier's cheap and easy to find. I love the "Sleek and Shine" line. I also have hair like yours. Long, straight and fine.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
I have the same issues. And when my scalp gets dry, it gets itchy, and I scratch until I bleed. :(
I've started out with doing a lemon rinse on my hair about once a week. I just buy a big bottle of the Real Lemon stuff at my local price club. I keep the bottle in the shower. I just pop the top and pour it onto my hair. Then I either shampoo with the lemon juice still in it, or rinse the lemon then shampoo. That helps to strip out the build up and oil I've noticed.
I also started using the Honey moisturizing shampoo and conditioner from the body shop. They have another one that is great for the dry scalp, but I needed hte honey for my daughters hair (insane curls on a five year old). I love using the body shop stuff because while much pricier than what I pay in the store, I can have an at home party and get it for free. :)

Sonja,
I have similar hair issues as you. This product is a spray in dry shampoo, and before you say ("ick, but what about after workouts?") Give it a try. It's bit pricey $20 or so, but it lasts awhile. I workout everyday and sweat too but this product saves my fine hair from stripping and preserves my color since I now wash every other day.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
Sonja, I also have long fine hair, not as thick as yours, probably, but not super thin either.
This is what I use every day with 1X application or every other day with 2X application. It doesn't leave any buildup AT ALL. I also use the matching conditioner. I don't use any styling products, even hairspray--they just make my hair look greasy.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
This is all such great stuff, I see myself sitting in the shower surrounded by 15 bottles of shampoo, wondering why my hair is falling out....could it be I'm shampooing 10 times a day so I can try it all?? Hee hee!
First up is Garnier, I used it today, but my hair's been in a pony tail since I washed it, so I can't tell how it did...I have a meeting tomorrow, so I'll actually have to fix it, so I'll let ya'll know how it goes!! :-)

You should probably use a treatment shampoo occasionally; one that contains a little salicylic acid. It really relieves dry and itchy scalp. I used one called Ionax and found it worked for me.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
LUSH's "Reincarnate" solid shampoo completely got rid of my buildup and left me with super shiny, bouncy, not-stripped hair (and has a fabulous spicy, clove-y scent to it). It's $8-12 or so per chunk, but since it's solid it lasts forever. My partner is hooked on it now too.

Apparently, you can solve your hair problems by using Sodium Lauryl Sulfate free shampoos. There might be info on the "curly girl" thread.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
I second that one. I have the same issue with my hair and this cured it right up. This particular shampoo got discontinued where I live (wah!), still available in the States but I've successfully replaced it with Lush's "Cynthia SYlvia Stout" shampoo, if you prefer bottled shampoo.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
It's still available on the LUSH website under the "Retro" section for folks who live in the States. (I use Cynthia Sylvia Stout most mornings too! But when I need to get rid of a little build-up or put some body back in it I go back to Reincarnate for a few days and it works like a charm.)

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
I was going to suggest cutting shampoo altogether. It's a self-perpetuating cycle as your hair is stripped of its oils and must play catch up so you end up with greasy and dry hair.
I stopped using shampoo a year ago. I clean my hair with baking soda dissolved in water, then follow with apple cider in water. When I get out of the shower, I comb some leave-in conditioner in it. I can go longer without washing my hair than I could before and it's nice looking than it used to be. The best part is that after a late show I can just rinse it with water and go to work the next day and my hair looks normal.
The only problem with this system is that some people go through a poorly-named detox period in which their hair looks awful. I went though that for a week.
You don't have to do all that, but I know a lot of the curly girls don't shampoo, just condition.

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
Wow, and I'm witness to how pretty your hair is! I'm shocked. I wouldn't dare not shampoo.... I've heard the sodium laurel sulfate is the scalp-killer, too...that's basically what my hairstylist told me. I like the garnier so far, after only 2 days, but I still have what I like to call "scalp grit" because it's combo dry/oily. I will have to stick with it to use up the massive bottle (it was on sale), but next go round, I might try one of the natural options...

Sometimes I use the Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo to get the other shampoo kunk out. Been using this since I was a kid.

Avalon Organics Lemon shampoo and conditioner (I buy it at Food Lion in the organic section, I think Whole Foods might carry too). I also have very fine, very straight hair, and I LOVE this stuff (also cleans out the buildup!)

Re: Shampoo woes! A good one?
I'm a natural blond as well, but I'm a "mixed" blond (I don't like the term dirty blond). It doesn't change the color, I think it just "brightens" it a bit. I think it just makes it shinier and because it's stripping off buildup it reflects light more. I use this on my five year old daughter's hair as well. :) she loves it.
