What shoes do you wear with dresses?
Hello!
Normally I'm either barefoot or in a basic canvas ballet shoe for my performances (which are of the not-cabaret variety).
But now I have a pretty new Beledi dress...and I have no idea what footwear to wear!
The dress is black. I'd rather not do heels.
I'm toying with the idea of full body footundeez, sprayed silver (the metallic accent of the dress). Then I have some foot protection, looks like sandals but easier to dance in...
Suggestions?
(I'll put up a pic of the dress if requested, though it's not a great picture)

Pedinis. They have a half inch heel, suede sole. Also check out www.tictacktoes.com. They have lovely flats as well as low heels.

Re: What shoes do you wear with dresses?
Hi!
I think I do for this dress...it's not quite long enough to justify barefoot...plus while I have no problem being barefoot if it was a bedlah, I think shoes are needed for this costume...
I'm odd.
Pedinis are definitely cute - would nude work? I think black would break the line and draw focus to my feet. I just want them to look at the dress!
Here's the odd pic - I don't think the angle is terribly flattering, but it does help. I'm wearing flannel socks in the picture...

Re: What shoes do you wear with dresses?
I would probably go with 1" ballroom shoes. In tan satin. Or Hermes - sometimes known as Lyric - sandals,

Re: What shoes do you wear with dresses?
oh, wear the socks! great look. ;)
you can get ballroom shoes with a very, very low chunky heel that are really easy to dance in. if you go to the retail swap page, you'll see a thread going by tina of centerstage dance - she sells completely customizable shoes in dozens of styles and a hundred fabrics. you can even get them with street soles so you can wear them for restaurant gigs and out on the town.
that said, I would wear a pair of low heeled heeled shoes in a simple style in metallic silver (especially if you have other costumes that silver would go with). flesh tone satin or leather would also be a nice "quiet" look. if you don't mind having the shoes get a bit more notice, I'd get a pair in RED. :)
character shoes would be an option, for a really discreet and conservative look. they come in nude and black. be sure to buy them in person at a dancewear store if you can, because you need to buy them much tighter than you would think (they stretch out and mold to your foot after a while) and having a live person's advice when you're trying them on is great.
lyric or hermes sandals would work, too, for a more barefoot feel. you can color them with leather paint and get metallic round elastic or silk rattail cord to lace them.Last edited by elisagamal; 02-24-2009 at 06:13 PM.

The full body foot undeez are kind of like a lyric sandal but with better coverage (see thumbnail)...
I was thinking I could paint them silver, or add silver thread...something to jazz them up just a little (and paint my toenails red, of course!)...

I don't like dancing barefoot... I prefer flats or low heels.

Beachcombers has nice and comfy Khussa shoes. Khussa Indian Shoes
I have a pair of these: Ethnic Bells Indian Sandals Belly Dance Bollywood Shoes Silver 7 "Raine".
You need to wear them a few times to mold them to your feet, but after that they are ver comfortable. I think those are available in brown leather too.

I love my pedinis, and I love black ballet slippers. I'd wear black with that dress myself, but it's personal preference.
If I were decorating the foot undees, I'd sew on a little sprinkling or pattern of silver sequins, I think. That would be very versatile.
You could just paint your nails and wear the footundeez and let them not call too much attention to themselves.

if you don't want attention to your foot then I wouldn't paint the undeez silver. That just attrachs attention. leave them nude IMO.

Re: What shoes do you wear with dresses?
Yeah, that's kind of why I want something shoe-ish without being too much shoe. If I was just wearing the dress black pumps would be the most obvious choice...
But since I'm dancing and used to dancing barefoot or ballet-slipper, I have my issue.
A little line of sequins sounds nice...so it looks like a sandal.
(Leaving them nude would make them less noticeable but a little bling helps for those who are looking ha ha)

Hmm, maybe a pair of leather soled Isotoner slippers? Cut off any super silly rosettes or bows, add sequins or stones if you want embellishment. They also have satin wedding ones. I think a jeweled flat would be nice too. I have a pair I picked up at Target years ago that are the perfect hard surface dance slipper, though I think the fashion for them may be going out. Target and Payless both have some super flat ballerina style shoes right now.

Re: What shoes do you wear with dresses?
I keep a pair of heels in my studio and work in them...not often as I should...but it keeps me in practise. I wear heels at work too.

Re: What shoes do you wear with dresses?
I do wear heels at work but I don't usually dance in them. ..g.:
I tried on the Pedinis; Apparently I'm also a low-baller - my heel is not far off the ground when I'm on the balls of my feet. So a little chassé step sequence became step ballclunk step.
Heh. I'll pick them up again sometime in order to practice arching my foot more I guess, but in the meantime foot undeez it is if I don't use my plain ol' ballet slippers.
Thanks all!
