Thread: Replacement straps for hermes sandals

I never wear my hermes anymore. I usually dance in heels but there are times I don't want to wear the heels. I don't like the fake leather straps with my hermes. They cut into my ankles. Very uncomfortable.
What have you replaced your hermes straps with?

Try satin ribbon or a silk cord, maybe?

I thought about that. Do you think that may slip? Meaning it would not stay tied.

try real leather straps (nice soft suede'y ones).

I know some of my troupe mates have changed their laces over to gold or silver ribbon and I haven't heard any complaints. I would think the silk cord might slip, but if you double knotted it, it should stay in place.

I bought some leather laces from arubaoasis.com one time and really liked them. They come in many colors.

The 2nd time I ordered them, though, the laces were made with thicker leather than previously and not as nice looking (and hard to get through the holes in my sandals). So I went to the leather store, bought some thin gold leather, changed out the needle in my sewing machine and hand-made some really wicked cool gold leather laces. They are comfortable and the knot doesn't slip. But you might try Aruba if you don't envision making your own.

I use some stuff from the craft store that Fahtiem recommended...it's stretch gold corded stuff but I can't remember what exactly it's called. Comes in metallics and black.

The leather cord (the thicker variety that came with sandals from Mesmera) is very comfortable too.

I second Aruba's Oasis -- my Mom (71 y.o. with finicky feet) loves her sandals and laces. All my troupers do, too.

I've worn hermes sandals for 20 years. silk rattail cord is pretty and comes in tons of colors, but it is a bit slippery and you have to double knot it really tightly.

the round elastic cord nasila mentions is what I use now. it's the stretchy gold cord they use to wrap around candy boxes. :) it has GREAT grip so you can tie a really small bow or double knot, and while you need to tie it snug, it has a lot of give so it's not so binding. although if you catch the toe of your shoe on a rug or something it can pull the sandal away from your foot in a rather alarming way before it pops back. ;) it also looks very delicate and classy. I paint my shoes with leather paint to match.

with either, if you have them on for any extended length of time the straps will bite into your ankles. the elastic ties are easier to reposition while they're on your feet. the silk cords you have to retie.

I swapped the laces on mine out for gold rattail cord. As Elisa mentions, silk rattail cord is quite slippery, but the metallic version has a solid grip.

I just went to the fabric and craft store and looked thru all the different trims until I found a couple I thought would work.......there were quite a few choices, and I found one that was kind of flesh colored but sparkly, holds really well and looks great.
Plenty of inexpensive choices too.

Thanks ladies. I will make a trip to the fabric store and see what I can find. I like to use my hermes for outdoor gigs where I'll be dancing on the uneven ground and heels would not be good. I just can't stand the pleather straps. lol
