best lipstick for performance? (doesn't attract veils or hair)
I want to have *some* gloss & shine - don't want completely matte, dried out lips, but even my least glossy lipsticks seem to get everywhere!! The little bit of moistness in my lipstick attracts EVERYTHING! My veil, my caftan as I'm pulling it over my head, and my hair LOVES to hang on my lipstick. Surely I'm not the only one who has struggled with this? What do you all use?

MAC Russian Red, same as for day. But I dislike gloss.

When I'm doing veil, I use long-wear lipstick. I've been really happy with the American Beauty line at Kohl's. It really does last, it's not too sticky, and doesn't get all over my veil.

It's matte but not chalkily so - quite creamy.
I know I would always err on the side of cream or matte for dancing not only because I dislike gloss but because it runs and attracts hair/veils like nothing else.

Over well-moisturized lips, I put some gloss-type lip color and leave it sit. When I'm just about ready to perform, I slide red lip liner all over my lips. Because it's lip liner and therefore comes in pencil form, it takes longer than lipstick to apply, but I've been very happy with the results. It's matte, but doesn't feel dry.

MAC Lip Mix in whatever color you want (very dry but STAYING power, OMG) + Lip Mix in clear (adds moisture but not goopy).

Re: best lipstick for performance? (doesn't attract veils or hair)
My troupe mates and I use Revlon's ColorStay Overtime. There is the color layer and there's the gloss layer. I initially used to use the older formula of ColorStay (just a color layer) to stop getting my lipstick on my silk veils (worked real well). As with many brands of mainstream makeup, Revlon changed their ColorStay line so I was less happy with the single layer lipstick. My partner Sedonia turned me on to the Overtime line a couple years back and I've been happy with the results - long lasting lipstick (just try to get it off) that has an excellent gloss and does not come off on my veil.

Milani Color Perfect lipsticks!
They are dirt cheap but highly pigmented-
I apply,blot,powder,another layer and blot.

My favorite too is MAC. But stay with the matte because it doesn't stick to anything but your lips!

I like CoverGirl's Outlast all-day lip color. The price is right, and I can put it on even hours before I perform, and I don't have to worry about it budging.
Outlast All Day Lipcolor :: CoverGirl
It's a little drying if you wear it for several hours, but after I take it off I put some Aquaphor on my lips and it's good as new. :)

I use lipsticks that have a good stain to them, then blot, then apply a wee bit of lipbalm.
Lipsticks with a good stain: Chanel Hydra-Base, Wet n Wild, Milani. (+many others I'm sure but those 3 are pretty much bulletproof.)

I second Tedi's Colorstay Overtime. If you happen brush up against your hair/veil only the clear gloss could possibly gets stuck. I just use the tiniest bit of gloss to "wet' the look and avoid the dreaded cakey lip. They color is literally painted on and WILL NOT transfer at all. It also doesn't feather or run, so thats a bonus. Great for long days or photoshoots that don't allow time for constant touch ups too. ps eye makeup remover takes it off easily, don't buy the companion remover.

I use one of the longwearing lipcolors, too - I think mine is Maybelline, I'm certain it's a drugstore brand. Paint on the stain, let it dry, then a thin coat of moisturizing balm goes overtop to keep lips from drying out. It's perfect for performance.

Re: best lipstick for performance? (doesn't attract veils or hair)
yes, I remember the lipsticks from the original colorstay line - slim things in black - I loved those! I hate when they change a good thing.
I'll have to try this new line.
And thank you to everyone, lots of good suggestions to try.
can you tell how long it's been since I had to worry about performance makeup?

Maybelline has been around forever and a day. I think they are tried and true for sure. The one thing that annoys me about the brand is that a lot of the time, when it's sold here, it doesn't have testers!
