    Fish oil?

I have been diagnosed with dry eye and have to take fish oil for it. Anyone else take it? I read it helps with depression...anyone know? Wondering about what all people use it for.

    hi Sonja!
my dad has to take that stuff because of some acid-complications in the kidneys...but ive heard that it also helps for lots of other things
in greece, up to about the 40s, parents and grannies used to give that stuff t children because apparently it's very nourishing and it helps children grow
whether all that stuff is true, i really don't know!
    good luck with your eye(s)
    xx

Great for your brain and even better for your skin and hair. Gives you a great glow!

Just get the kind with the lemon flavoring to avoid unsexy "fishy burps," an unpleasant caveat to unflavored products .w.:..c::

I take fish oil, Purity brand. Does not cause burping. But my doctor suggested keeping fish oil capsules in the freezer if they do cause burps, that is supposed to lessen the burping factor.

Sonja, I was diagnosed with it too and my eye doctor said not to use just any fish oil but one formulated for dry eye. Something about the type of fish and levels of other oils. Here is what I use. It's kind of pricey but I only take one capsule 2X a day instead of 2 capsules 2x a day and it works like a charm. Try reading about it here:

Oh doctor, oh doctor, oh dear Doctor John,
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong!
I'm afraid for my life -- I'll go down in the soil
If me wife don't stop drinkin' your cod liver oil!

I couldn't help but add a bit of my culture to this thread: taking cod liver oil is a long-standing practice in Newfoundland, and many a child has been forced to do so against their will.

The omega-3 fatty acids, EPA, and DHA in fish oil are good, as far as I know, for maintaining the health of skin, hair, joints, and internal organs, including the brain. I should take it, but I haven't gotten into the habit of it.

    Hi Sonja,

I take fish oil, and there are many studies that back up the claims regarding joint health, mood, etc. I got in the habit of taking it for a medical condition but now it's just part of my diet - the visible difference it has made to me is I now have nails that grow very fast and strong, whereas they used to be brittle and fragile before. I'm sure that's a good sign! Just make sure you get a purified brand; that is to be sure it doesn't contain mercury or other toxins. Don't take it on an empty stomach or you can get fishy-tasting reflux.

It is supposed to help your heart, your cholesteral (sp?), and relieve depression in some cases. I am nominally vegetarian (I don't eat any animal flesh, including fish), but I started taking fish oil last year for my health. I had to think about it for a while first, but I decided it was in the same vein as taking vitamin E pills even though they contain gelatin - a compromise I'm willing to take with my health in mind.

We had to take it in the winter in Norway (some people take it year long)... it's suppose to be really good for you... and since I moved to the US I picked up the habit again lately... it's really good for your joints and heart...and since I'm a supplemental pillpopper I take it along with folic acid, glucosamine, multi-vitamins, B12 and extra Dvitamin....

My goodness that is why you are so active in Bhuz. (meaning well ..g.:)

Fish oil is so good just for everything, including blood vessels. Haven`t heard about it as a depression medication.
Haven`t heard of using for dry eye... although there always have been a lot of dry eye syndrom sufferers in Japan. I feel this country must have invented it with school age kids spending many hours a day playing computer games. I developed mine one after spending one hot and humid summer in Tokyo (usually I take refuge in Europe but recent years it doesn`t hepl much...).
I got obviously eye drops and my eyes recovered in few months.

Did you have test for the amount of tears (doctor puts stripes of kind of blotting paper at the lower eyelids) ?

Yes, fewer fish burps after eating salmon or tuna! ..g.: The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil serve as lubricants for the entire body - joints, blood vessels, skin & hair & nails, digestion, and *great* for baby's brain in utero and while breastfeeding - but they are sorely lacking in most modern-day diets. They are essential to normal growth in young children and animals and we don't outgrow the need for them.

There are other ways to obtain it, too. Flax is a good source, as is evening primrose oil (for vegetarians). I like Total EFA from Trader Joe's...it's got a little bit of all of 'em.

I have a bit of dry eye too, and my doc didn't mention EFA consumption but I have been ignoring my O-3 intake! Thanks for starting this thread.

Was also going to mention flax seed oil as veggie alternative to fish oil. I currently take Udo's Oil (which I you can find online and in natural supermarkets), which is combination out of flax and some other oils that are rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 like just like fish oil. This is what my naturopath recommended as a fish oil alternative.

He put me on a system...treating internally with fish oil, externally with a very gentle (and AWESOME) eyelash cleanser and Systane eye drops, which rock!

He did test my tear evaporation and said my right eye was really dry. It's due to my antidepressant. ,f::

    Re: Fish oil?

FYI...another coworker of mine had dry eye and cleared it up with fish oil, alone. My eye doctor said the 3-part treatment is best. His assistant (who is a ballroom dancer) also said the eyelash cleanser is a great mascara remover :-) added benefit!!

Fish oil is supposed to improve brain function as well. I read that parents in Japan give it to their children before tests for this reason.

The Omega 3 Fatty acids in fish oil and flaxseed oil helps moisturise the skin. You can tell if you are deficient in Omega 3s if you have dry skin because it is the last bodypart to get Omega 3s.

That is the reason I use flaxseed oil or Udo oil blend. I dont trust the purity of fish oil or the way it is processed.

I use Krill oil as Krill are zooplankton -- lower on the food chain so pollutants are not concentrated in them.
