I have the same thought every time I watch one of these shows - the dancing itself in ballroom dancing often seems more provocative to me as well - but that could be just me ... I think people just often have a preconceived idea in their head *shrug*
Their costumes ARE beautiful ... but I'd personally have to alter many of them by adding more of a skirt to be comfortable![]()

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
Looking at the cuts of some of these, I wonder if it isn't the other way around... did THEY get ballroom dress inspiration from bellydance costumes?

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
I have been wondering the same thing after watching some ballroom dance competition shows this last weekend (which was NOT chock-a-block full of bare midriffs as we are seeing here). I think the designers are making these baring styles specifically for the dancers with amazing torsos as eye candy for the program.

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
Is it just me or have anyone else noticed how LAME the costumes for the guys always are? Either they're way too silly or they're "chiffon shirt with glittery stones" in various colors.
The only time those poor guys get to wear something NICE is when they wear the classic ballroom suits or slacks/vest... SIGH...

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
This is my all time favorite! Dancing with the Stars drives me stark raving mad with costume-lust. I even tried to research what they do with the costumes after they're used! (There have also been several to which all I can say is, WTF??? and too many which simply reveal too much skin!! They just HAD to stoop to the lowest common denominator.....)
I have designed innumerable costumes, many based on DWTS, but have no time/resources to make them or have them made.
I did make one costume several years ago with a feature inspired by a ballroom outfit, but with my own twist, and it is a timeless stunner!Last edited by yasalem; 03-19-2009 at 05:54 AM.

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
I thought this thread could use the link to the DWTS dresses for sale by the designer, click on the season you want to see.

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
With a skirt, this would be hot!

This is nice too:

Again, another one that needs a skirt and then it would be perfect for belly dance!

Wish there was a better pic of this one, but it really is a belly dance costume and my favorite of the night. ;)

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
I think that modern ballroom costumes are bellydance inspired. On the last season of Dancing with the Stars, Brooke Burke wore a brown bedlah with some brown bootcut stretch pants for her dance costume.
I like certain evening gowns as bellydance costumes. In fact, I bought an evening gown to wear as a dance costume. I haven't worn it yet but I thought it was perfect. It just needs some new straps, arm costuming and the right hip scarf/belt to go with it. The fabric is stretch polyester and has stretch mesh cut-outs under the bust and in the side slit and the beaded embroidery is in the front and back of the dress and along the front and back of the slit.
I found the dress in the mall. It was on sale for $129 and it was the last one in my size so I couldn't pass it up.

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
Yep, ballroom costumes these days are definitely bellydance inspired. If you notice, the more popular bellydance has become in recent times, the more ballroom dance costumes look like bellydance costumes. This pic Aviva posted is most definitely a bedlah.

Re: Costume Inspiration from non-bellydance sources
OMG---and they think WE are risque? I watched a show once where they discussed that it's the dancers who design/determine their costumes and each is made specifically for them. Edyta ALWAYS wears absolute minimal, and it's just sleazy. This is gorgeous, but put a skirt to it, please! It actually detracts from the beauty of it, and from the dance. This is not appropriate for "family" entertainment.

Yeah....I'm wondering...the Latin Dreses from Randall are most Bellydance-inspired! But we have so much luck - our designers are most cheaper!
But some seem the Look of SIM (the salmon dress)RANDALLscroll down it's the last...and the blue before amy a SIM too...and the black in the middle may be a Sahar...
and here the first may be a Mamdouh:RANDALL
