Black hair dye?
Hi all,
I wanted to ask if there was such a thing as temporary black hair dye. I've heard there isn't, and the last time I tried this it took six months to leave my hair! However, I'd like to do a temporary thing for fun if it's possible.

Re: Black hair dye?
There is some a black hair spray product available at costume stores(Halloween type costumes), one of my boys dressed up like the Hulk one year, used the green hairspray all over his body(6 cans) and the black in his hair(he has carrot red hair) It washed out easily.
I have very dark brown hair, but even I am afraid to use black hair dye.

How about that stuff that bald guys spray on their heads so you think they have hair?

Hahaha Bella Bella!
I'm looking for something that will, at least for a short while, look authentic.

Re: Black hair dye?
Semi-permanent hair color.
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being jet black, one can only color their hair 1-2 levels at a time, however.
Thus, if you have hair that is light-ish, such as 6 or 7, you would need to pre-soften it to take the darker color; doing several treatments.
Pre-softening is what they do prior to coloring gray hair, for example. If you have rather light hair, you cannot effectively go directly to dark dark.
You can also try a wig.

Re: Black hair dye?
in my experience, there is no such thing as semi-permanent black. I tried the "wash off in 6 weeks kind" and it was still solid black 8 months later. Which is fine if that's what you're after, but temporary? I'd stick with a spray or a wig.
Oh and if you have blond streaks, they will turn dark green. :)

Re: Black hair dye?
My co-worker had this happen! She had pretty dark hair, so she didn't think jet black would clash with her skin-tone, and she just dyed it on a whim. Needless to say she hated it, tried having it dyed back to brown with some blonde highlights at a reputable salon, and came back to work green. Thankfully it was close to Halloween so she made the best of it, but still...!

Re: Black hair dye?
I've always heard that it's best to go with a really deep, dark brown than a true black. To me, black hair dye always looks very, very flat.

Re: Black hair dye?
I think I've seen a temporary color mousse by Clairol or L'Oreal called Color Flirts? Looks like something you shampoo in for a night out or whatever, that rinses out after 6-8 shampoos.
Not sure if they still make this, but I saw it at the supermarket once.

Re: Black hair dye?
When I dyed my hair black (it was supposed to be temporary but wasn't!) it was very shiny and looked really real. However, I would like the color to just last a little while. My hair is sort of a light brown so I'm sure that has something to do with the non-temporary color. I've dyed it temporary red and that washed out just fine.
Satin, have you ever tried those?

Re: Black hair dye?
Hey Brea, I am butting here again even though you were asking Satin because...well... I have a big mouth.
I color my hair all the time with semi-permanent hair color. I use Colorsilk because it is inexpensive and does a nice job on my hair. I am fortunate to have healthy hair and be able to get away with using a box color, but I recommend most people to use a professional colorist. Also I try to match my natural color as much as possible, I am trying to cover those grays that are sneaking in very fast now. From time to time I like to go have red lights put in but I do those professionally, my hair dresser tells me red is the one color that will fade the fastest and it seems that red does fade quickly for me.
Once, long ago, my mother(a hairstylist) made me promise to never, ever put real black in my hair. She said it would ruin it, but I am wondering....
if you use a semi-permanent and only leave it in for a short time(not what is recommended on the box) what your results would be. Maybe enough to give you the color you want but fade quickly, I imagine then you would have go back over it to get back to your original color though. I don't know if you would want to do that? You will have a line as you get new hair growth no matter how much the black fades. I would really hate for you to "ruin" your hair, though.
Has anybody done this with black semi-permanent color?
Just trying to help.........

Re: Black hair dye?
Hi cgoltry,
When I dyed it black last time it was an amazing shiny color that looked real, and it *did* wash out without lines...it just took 6 months! ..g.:
I enjoyed the look of it but not sure I want to have that look for another six months...

Re: Black hair dye?
Brea, perhaps you should try a clear cellophane/Jazzing on your hair before you try the semi-perm black. It may seal your cuticle so that the hair doesn't absorb as much black dye. Unfort, it may also prevent the dye from grabbing at all. But if you really want to go for black, it might work.

Re: Black hair dye?
Don't they make "temporary" colours any more?
Brea, your hair mat be very porous which means colour will either grab or wash out quickly. If you choose a colour check that it has no peroxide in it. If it has peroxide in it you don't want it - it will stay longer. But there are *heaps* of wash-in colours that shouldn't last much more than six shampoos. Or there used to be. You go for those.
*comes back*
What am I saying? How could I forget the gloriously awful Roux Fanci-Full? They have a black. Just don't wear it in the rain or it'll run all over your face.

Re: Black hair dye?
Oh, that is scary! I don't want to end up with green hair or whatever, but I also don't want to get the same stuff I used before (supposedly temporary) that took months to wash out of my hair.
If I decide it's an awesome look for me I might keep it (my best friend thought it was the greatest thing ever) but the boys in my life missed the golden hair. ..g.:

As a child I had soft black hair, which has now "lightened" to very dark brown. I have tried many times to get my original color back but it never looked right, nor did I ever find a "temporary" black color either. It's funny though that the most popular hair color in New York is jet black but no matter what brand I've tried, it never looks real - and I was born with it!

Re: Black hair dye?
Roux Fanci-Full has a nice effect but in addition to the rain sweat will dislodge the color. I had a nice brown streak on the collar of my blouse once. My mom uses it all the time for her super short hair without issue though. I like the spray in hair color at Walgreens it seems to stick better through sweating. I'm sure they have something similar at Sally's Beauty supply.
