    professionally straightened hair

I'd really like to be done with blow drying, styling products and flat irons every day (and then watch it curl up anyways)..my eye doc has long super bushy wavy hair and had it straightened..said the first round cost 800 bucks then now just needs touch ups every 3 months. I'm sold on it. So sick of waves. They are not curls just waves that make funny shapes.

Does anyone know if you can straighten layered hair ? Will it look chunky and dumb? I won't be able to go in for a consult of any type until I get back to Oahu.

Depending on how healthy your ends are, they will either look nice and flat and smooth or like the ends of electrical wires.

I did the straightening system and it did not work (2 x 6-hour treatments + $500 later).

If you want less bushy, try Aveda's "Smooth Infusions" shampoo. It is miraculously smoothing.

Your hair could also change over time (hormones, age, environment, etc.). For years I had battled "unresolved" dry waves and bushiness. For some reason, I don't have to do much to it now to make it smooth.

My hair use to be bone straight and then I turned 30. Now its so damned wavy and curly (poofy) that I need to straighten it with a curling iron every time I wash it.

    Re: professionally straightened hair

my eye doc paid 800 for her tresses but she told me her hair is very thick and coarse (she called it Samoan:) mine has light waves so i'm going for a consult to see what they would recommend

seriously i'd have no problem paying a few hundred bucks to not have to flat iron and blow dry every day and then still watch it kink up. plus that ***** who whacked off too much a few months ago left me with layers that make me look like a walking mushroom. when i flat iron the mushroom goes away

Would you every consider henna? I started using it on my hair last summer, and I was surprised to see it took every bit of curl and wave from my hair. I'd had a perm long ago, and POOF it was gone. It made my hair feel really silky and heavy and straight, though I don't naturally have a huge amount of curl, just light waves. Used to, anyway.

well. had a consult yesterday and she said i would have to choose between surfing (frequency in the water and sun) and straightening. surfing won of course so i bought one of those super um expensive straightening irons ..she showed me how to flat iron in about 10 minutes. by evening due to the rain it was starting to curl up again but for a few hours i had sleek perfect straight long hair. sigh. can't beat surfing

    Re: professionally straightened hair

Once you get it professionly straightened is it always straight even if you try to curl it with an iron. I like striaght hair but somtimes I want it wavy or curly too. I like options, but blow drying and straighting can get really annoying after doing everyday!

After 18 years of getting my hair straightened (relaxed) every six weeks, I cut it all off and allowed my natural curls and kinks to break free and it was the best thing I ever did.

    Re: professionally straightened hair

As a former hairdresser I can tell you straight (heh) that long-term the best thing you can do with your hair is stop fighting it. Straightened hair has been a mainstream trend for quite a few years despite manful attempts by the fashion industry to kill it off, but you can mark my words that ten years from now you'll be looking at your straightened hair pix and cringing just the same way you now cringe at old perm pictures.

If you want to straighten, use irons. If you want to curl, use rollers or irons. Chemical straightening or curling is a pain in the arse and needs constant retouching.

I am so glad you opted out of chemical hair straightening. I did it and I still used products and irons to put life into it because it just hangs there. Plus you are sitting there for five hours plus when you could be enjoying something else.

I only did it so that my sister to get the perm credits to graduate cosmetology school. It's almost grown out, yay!

Aveda's stuff is GREAT for wavy/curly hair. It really does calm it down.

This happened when I turned about 40....perimenopause and the hormonal changes. From stick-straight-won't hold a curl to save my life to-won't stay straight for longer than an hour unless it's low humidity!

Just try to make peace with your hair and maybe get a design consult so you can learn to style it and wear it different ways.

Top Quality hair gagets are well worth it. I used to buy irons, rollers, hair dryers all the time....then I purchased Rusk Brand items - A friend was a stylist and took me to her Supply House. The Blow Dryer was $150- The Flat Iron $100 on sale- and I have had the same for over 5 years....

And I agree with Zuma to go with your natural hair...

I know! The grass is always greener. I have straight, but would love naturally curly. Seems easier to iron out curls than to try and curl ring after ring of straight hair. Plus, curly hair adds dimension so your face. Just my opinion. Every time I meet someone with curly hair and tell them how pretty it is they all say without fail , "I hate it." Go figure.

    Re: professionally straightened hair

My hair just started to go curly in the last couple of years (hmmm, after the baby, hmmmm). Recently I've been encouraging it, and I've started to get the "your curly hair is so cute" comments. Curly hair is coming back in.
