Primer?
This is a make-up-for-every-day question:
What is primer and would it help me smooth over some of my wrinkles before I put on foundation? I am a little confused because it seems like tinted lotion and I already use Olay daily SPF lotion under my foundation...so...is it worth the $$$ to buy primer?

Re: Primer?
Go to the fem. products section and buy this anti-chaf stuff by monistat...same thing, way cheaper! I dont know about the wrinkles, but makeup goes on a lot smoother.

Re: Primer?
I've never tried it myself but my beauty editor friends swear by it. And they get all manner of stuff for free and are quite upfront, in person anyway, about what they think is valuable and what isn't.

Re: Primer?
I use Revlon primer, and makeup goes on smoothly, but I'm thinking about ditching it and using Milk of Magnesia instead. It's supposed to keep makeup from running when you sweat. As for wrinkles, I haven't noticed my primer making any difference.

Re: Primer?
Primer is not necessary. What it will do, though, is help to smooth over rough patches, temporarily help to fill in/smooth out lines and can help to make foundation apply more evenly and last longer. I don't use it on an everyday basis, but always do if I'm getting extra dressed up or made-up for stage.
BTW - Anala's recommendation is perfectly correct. You can avoid paying the expensive prices for makeup primer and use Monistat Anti-Chafing Gel - it'll do the same thing.

Re: Primer?
Yep. All it does is apply a barrier over your skin, which is what primer is for. Yay for silicone!

Re: Primer?
I'm new to using primer, and I love it! It helps fill in some of the larger pores and gives a smoother appearance. I've also started using an eyelid primer. It helps even cheap makeup stay on and have better coverage.

Re: Primer?
I use Photo Finish by Smashbox -- you can get it at Nordstrom's or Sephora on line ...... the larger size tube is way cheaper in the long run than the one-ounce pump. I love this product--makeup glides on over it. You just need a tiny bit -- and it's not oily, feels like velvet.

Re: Primer?
I sometimes use it, but I'm never sure if I'm using it correctly. The "how" of primer has never been clear to me. Do you put it on and let it set, then apply foundation, or do you apply foundation immediately? I would really appreciate any details y'all can provide on application.

Re: Primer?
Then how do you keep the foundation over, not mixed into, the primer? Or don't you? Help! I feel like an idiot here.

Re: Primer?
You can pretty much put your foundation on right away. And yep, it's moisturizer, then primer, then foundation. But I don't use moisturizer a lot as I have oilier skin. Primer helps to curb the oil.

HI MISH!!!!
I MISH YOU!
I'll give a third on Smashbox - LOVE IT!
Great for photography and everyday. Not so important for stage, imho.
I use this tinted primer instead of foundation for a fresh natural, "I'm not trying" look.
I also really like DHC Velvet Skin Coat
DHC FOR BEAUTY AND HEALTH: Skincare

Re: Primer?
The primer...jeeezzz, where is the spackle??.....dries right away because it is not a fluid really. I wear it alone sometimes 'cause it absorbs oil.

Re: Primer?
LOL!!! Monistat!!!! LOL!!! ..l;, I don't put moisturizer underneath. Just the Photo Finish primer and foundation immediately after. I don't think you can keep it from mixing in somewhat--it doesn't really "set", at least Smashbox doesn't.

Re: Primer?
Second the recommendation for DHC velvet skin coat. I disliked the Smashbox as it made my makeup ball up. Some of the new liquid foundations have a primer built into them though, anything with a lot of silcone, so check what you are using.

Re: Primer?
Primer definitely helps keep my eye shadow on with no creases, my main problem. I use Smashbox but I picked up some of the Monistat cream and it seems to work well so far!

Re: Primer?
I also use a primer made by Revlon, but I may have to consider trying the Monistat gel (why not...what's another feminine product in the household?!).

Ok, Ok..I know, lets invent some stiffer stuff like that - and call it grout!
If we all go out and buy Monistat anti chafe cream...wont retailers all over this country assume that womans thighs have reached epic propotions? A nation wide run on friction medication....hmmmmmLast edited by anala; 03-19-2009 at 11:18 PM.

Re: Primer?
I use laura mercier primer (I've tried smashbox and some other brands and they don't work as well for me). I use it any time I wear foundation (always for dance, very rarely in my day to day life). I'm 40 and have tiny feathery lines developing around my eyes, so the primer REALLY helps the foundation not settle into them. it also helps the foundation go on smoother.
it doesn't take much so a tube lasts a long time, and you'll also use less foundation if you use primer, so I don't see why not to go ahead and spring another ten bucks for the good stuff.

Re: Primer?
I've been using Monistat for over six months, and it works great! I use it over my moisturizer, and my makeup stays on all day.
