How not to cut fabric to cover your belt AND how to

I got a little crazy with the scissors today, .w.: cutting into the fabric to the edge to cover an angle in my belt. I ended up using FrayCheck on that deep cut and I'm HOPING it works!

This is how not to do it:

On the other piece of the belt, the back, I pinned the fabric close to the edge on the wrong side and then only cut to the pin, not to the edge. It still allows a ton of give to happen.

This is a better depth to cut the fabric:

Don't do as I do. I'm using plenty of Fraycheck today.

I'm confused. I don't understand what I'm looking at. Is it the inside with some odd looking denim backing???

The blue is the interfacing of the belt, on the inside. The brown is the cover fabric to the belt, that has very deep cuts to create give. Oops.

The second photo is a better example of what to do.

I always appreciate the tutorials. Good luck Nadyasidhe.

The first pic is an example of what not to do.
    Thanks, Tink, for clarifying!
I edited the original to be more understandable.

OH, I SEE IT NOW. The brown is COVERING the blue and not the other way around :-)!

For the life of me, I couldn't make heads or tails out of what the heck was going on! Especially with it looking like the stitiching and blue on the outside!!! I thought the blue was the belt with the stitching... oh never mind.

ROFLMAOF!!!! It just looked so whacked out!

Finished stitching the fabric on the belt base tonight. Here's the pics:

Since I'm putting grommets in the ends, I folded the fabric on the back at a deeper angle so there was one less layer of brown fabric to go through. -- actually two fewer layers, as it would be a fold.

If I could give you some advice....grommets tend to pull out after a while. I've used 'D' rings, sewn on with loops of matching fabric or wide seam binding sewn shut. You'll need to make a tube of the fabric: cut a good length of the fabric, about 2 to 3 inches wide, depending on the size of the 'D' rings. Sew the long sides together (wrong side out) and turn right side out. Cut into 2 to 3 inch lengths for your loops. I do this step before I line the belt. Feel free to PM me with any questions!

    Doozer, what a great idea!

I'm committed at this point (bought the "pro" grommets & setter), but I really like the D-ring idea. If they pull out, perhaps I'll restructure with Ds and/or use that idea in the future. *bats her eyes* --> Thanks!

(and I love your siggy quote!) Yeah pears!
