The art of the sexy lip
Best way? Red, thick lips? Stained, with a bit of gloss? Neutral? I wanna see some good pouts!

Re: The art of the sexy lip
For dance, I love a bright or dark matte red stained look -- on other people. I'm not happy with how it looks on me.
On myself, I like a nice bright clear red with a bit of gloss.

I'm a big fan of glossy nude (or else it wouldn't be on the cover!).

Are you searching for ideas for yourself?

Re: The art of the sexy lip
I love the look of a glossy nude lip, too. At the same time, the first and only time I ever went with a glossy nude lip for a performance, I was chided pretty sternly by the event's organizer. She's probably been dancing longer than I've been alive, and she came up to me after the show and told me that my lips were totally lost onstage. Then she started naming specific brands and colors that I should try.
I've never strayed from my dark red lip stains since!

Re: The art of the sexy lip
Because of the lights on the stage my choice is "Marilyn Monroe" red - that's the only one that gives me perfect lips also seen on a video -all brown shades make me look really bad. sorry no pics available.

Re: The art of the sexy lip
It all depends on the costume. If I'm going the Barbie route, I'll pick a bold blue-toned fuchsia (MAC Girl About Town) with a hot pink gloss on top. If I'm looking for a high-impact red, NARS makes a great matte red crayon called Dragon Girl. If I'm going for a pouty, sexy nude lip straight out of a Latin soap opera, I'll wear MAC lipliner in Soar, MAC lipstick in Cosmo, and sometimes one of the Bare Minerals Buxom glosses in a nude-y color on top.
If you do go nude, it's usually preferable to give it dimension with a slightly darker liner and a little bit of pale, iridescent gloss at the center of the lip. It shapes your lips beautifully and makes sure that the nude color doesn't blend right into your face.

Re: The art of the sexy lip
In addition to the costume, it depends on the venue. If I'm on a stage with bright, harsh lights, I love to go for the 40's-50's style glam red. My favorite shade for that is Ruby Ruby from American Beauty.
If I'm dancing in a smaller venue cafe/restaurant setting, I tend to go with lighter, glossier shades.

As an alternative to red, I've recently been doing MUFE dark Plum lip liner with a small amount of red gloss. It really stays! I also like the nude lip, I'll try your ideas Satin!

Re: The art of the sexy lip
I love red. Stila used to make this red I was obsessed with but has since discontinued. I think my current red that I use for "sexy" lips is Nars something or other.
BTW, if you go the glossy route, make sure your gloss isn't sticky if you're doing veil. I wore sticky gloss to a veil class last week, and I ended up with a glossy lip print on my veil. It washed out, thankfully, but it was ugly to look at while in class.

Re: The art of the sexy lip
I just tried a glossy nude lip for the first time last night (one of the Viva Glams. I forget which number). I did my eyes a really bold green and thought I'd try that to emphasize them. I liked the look.
but I'd only do it for a restaurant or party. for stage I'll do a bolder color. my bombshell red is Ruby Woo. for less intense red I'll do New York Apple, or Fresh Moroccan over red pencil & red gloss (without the red underneath it looks dirty and brown on me). I LOVE Girl About Town (I bought it because my friend Magidah wears it - to match her fucshia hair!), too. that's my new go-to pink (I also like Profusion). oh -all colors are MAC, of course.

Re: The art of the sexy lip
I am still scraping some matte fushia from a MAC tube of Moxie out of the bottom. When that runs out, I will be bummed. My ultimate favorite has been discontinued and I am on the last tube.

Can you mix two colors (or more) to make your favorite shade?

Re: The art of the sexy lip
I think one can get away with nude or lighter shades for close up performances.
Stop bleeding lips...

Re: The art of the sexy lip
try this: get some SheLaq (sephora carries it). after doing your lips, run a thin line of the sealer along the edge of your lipstick. I aim for half on the lipstick, half on the skin. do it while you're smiling and keep smiling while it dries. I promise your lips won't bleed!
I've also had good luck with the ben nye spray-on sealer. that stuff is the bomb. I wish I would have been told about it 10 years ago.
