Wait? It's illegal to get a bikini wax in Jersey!

I'm fine with regulating tanning booths for minors. Skin cancer is real and scary and teens are not always stellar in their judgement.

Of course, Uncle Sam is overstepping his boundary...always does. Then again, the only time I was stupid enough to go to a tanning bed was when I was under the age of 18...so perhaps it is a good idea?

Jeez, that's stupid - why not regulate how the procedure is done instead of making it illegal?

And what's to keep teens from over baking in the sun? Sunburns are the leading cause to skin cancers, not just UV rays from tanning booths.

Nope, that was proposed legislation that has since been thrown out.

Mystic Tan is a great alternative.

Well... tanning inside or outside isn't any better. On average (this is just an estimate, depends on the tanning bed but anyways) let's say you spend 10 minutes in a regular bed, it's like spending 3 hours outside in the sun, which isn't ALL that bad. Of course, if you do it daily, then it isn't so great for your skin. But I know so many people who spend days and days outside without any SPF and then pest again tanning booths. It doesn't make sense.

But I'm sort of biased, I tan once in a while. I use to BURN whenever I'd go outside, and since I've started tanning 1x week, I do not burn anymore.

However, I agree on that regulation. Teens shouldn't be tanning. I saw some really young teens at the tanning salon a few times (they were probaby 14 or 15 max) and I feel it's just wrong.

Dermatologists sometimes prescribe tanning beds for people with eczema or psoriasis (particularly patients who can't afford UV-B treatment in the derm's office)

LOL - before this I was joking with someone that we'd not only be the "overgrown" garden state but we would have to sneak our waxing supplies in from other states........brings a whole new Senfeld-esque meaning to the word "waxworthy"

    Re: Woah. Tanorexics Beware...

Watching my 14 year old student unable to sit back in her desk chair for several weeks and hold her shirt away from her blistered and oozing back and stomach (yet she kept going every day for weeks up until prom) really convinced me that making a minor go with a parent isn't such a bad idea. Teenagers lack a lot of important decision making skills.

You can do injury to yourself in all sorts of ways - how is that a valid argument against government regulation? I actually don't much care what adults do to themselves, but I'd be pissed if my kid came home a crispy critter b/c there were no rules.

I agree, don't ban it, but make sure there are rules and regulations concerning procedure.

that and i have seen some "doctors perscribe" it due to indirect heat to sooth joints and muscles pains (instead of actually applying a heat compress to the body, etc).... and when it is perscribed it is maybe 2 days tops out of the week i believe...

i had a teacher when i was in highshool who had to go, not to tan, but because of his joints..

Also in northern states, like Maine, a doctor may recommend tanning or full-spectrum light treatment to treat SAD and/or promote vitamin D absorbtion.

ohh ok. well couldn't laying out in the sun a little be just as effective? i'd stil be scared to tell them lie in a tanning bed...:-/

and i didn't know this could be prescribed for people who have SAD. i thought it was a seasonal thing and just needed more light, not necessarily just lying in a tanning bed?

    Re: Woah. Tanorexics Beware...

One of my friends got some nasty type of psoriasis that oozed, flaked and looked quite unsavory. She has doctor's orders to use a tanning bed and says it's one of the only things that makes her feel better.

I tan once in awhile in the winter to stave off depression.

The one good thing that could come out of this is that it will remove one layer of psychosis from the crazed pageant moms who make their 8-year-olds tan. THAT makes me livid.

Oh well. Guess this is good news for Mystic Tan and Jergens Natural Glow.

And WHY, pray tell, are bikini waxes illegal in Jersey? Yet another case where the government is literally up in our "business." Are women going to start depilitating in back alleys with duct tape now? Are they going to head to bordering states to get the job done? What's to say they won't buy home waxing hits and attempt to do it at home?

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't even get me started.....

I worked with someone who had really extensive psoriasis all over her body- and you're right on, that is exactly what her treatment was - prescribed UV exposure.

B/c if women can make decisions like how to groom, they might get uppity and start voting or something.

I suspect that these insidious regulations are a result of people getting injured and then suing. .p::

Hahahah, for real? I mean, there are much better ways to make sure that doesn't happen, right?

I didn't read the article about waxing , I was just being goofy.

I've heard a few doctors prescribe this. Maybe it acts like a placebo, but it works well for me!

Honestly, going for 10 min in a tanning bed 1x a week makes me feel awesome, especially since it's so darn cold here. And since I cannot afford a vacation to Cuba every winter

It was proposed legistlation (that was later thrown out) because of 2, yes only 2 cases in the entire state of people suffering medical issues after waxing. It was an alarmist response to an issue that was best left to local health inspectors.
