    Bump-its

Do they really work and more importantly, do they actually stay in place while dancing? Are clips/bobby pins/etc. needed to secure them in place? I'd hate to get them & then have one fly out mid-spin.

    Re: Bump-its

I bought them this weekend - Sally Beauty carries them. The mini ones need to be pinned to your head for every day wear - they are slippery little things. The bigger ones don't need to be pinned to just wear them around, but I think they'd need extra anchoring for dancing.

One thing to note is that you can see the teeth on them through your hair if you have fine, thin hair like me. You definitely need to tease your hair a bit to cover the bumpit's teeth well.

One of my students wears one, and dances in it. It stays really well, but she supplements with hairspray and a bobby pin or two.

She let me try hers, I LOVED the look and I was surprised how secure it was -- but my hair is so fine and thin it wouldn't hide the durned thing, even with a little teasing.

    You guessed it!

BumpIts enhance the height of the hair at the crown of the head. They're sorta capital "D" shaped, with the straight part of the "D" against the head and the arc'd part facing up.

To use, you lift the top layers of your hair at the crown out of the way and wiggle the straight part of the BumpIt into the remaining hair. Tease the lifted hair and lay it down over the arc'd part. Spray the heck out of it and, voila!, you have some height.

This post is really timely as I just saw an ad for it again on the tele an evening or two ago -- good to know it can be gotten from Sally Beauty. Bet you can find them at drug stores, too.

I hope I can use the small one!

    www.bumpits.com

I just got some the other day in the mail, You definitely need to anchor it down with 2 bobby pins and avoid doing any zarring.

    Good to know, thanks!

    I called the Sally Beauty here & this one doesn't carry them in the store - only on the website. Guess I'll be ordering off their website. I was going to get Vidal Sassoon's "poufs" (3 small rats on 3 combs) but Ulta hasn't had my hair color in for a month now. ,r:;

I kept reading it like "bum" "pits"... ..l;,

Similar, old-school technique is to use a small velcro roller.

    haha me too.
"bum pits .com" can you imagine registering that?

also, this look can be done by stuffing a small piece of an old stocking and pinning it under your hair.

i would pin that bumpit thing very securely. can you imagine the damage if that thing launched at an audience member? def not for khaleeji!

I'm probably showing my age here, but every time I read it, I get an earworm from the musical, "Gypsy," where the other strippers are giving the young Gypsy Rose Lee advice before her first dance. One of them sings, "If you're gonna bump it, bump it with a trumpet."

..l;, Could you imagine? Sling your hair & a bump-it lands in someone's moussaka, or worse, knocks them in the head - no tip from them...

Alternatively, you could keep all your shed hair for a few weeks (or months, depending on how long your hair is and what your shed rate is) and roll it up in a roll and pin it under your hair. It would match exactly and could be washed with shampoo.

I used a big ball of shed hairs to test henna once, and it sorta "felted" after all the washing, rinsing, and drying.

Now THAT'S old school! (My great grandmother used to do this. Seriously. ..l;,) Still, just because it's an old trick doesn't mean it's not a good one....

    Wow! What a great idea!

And I'd probably be able to assemble my own hair roll in, what, a week? ACK!

Oh wow, does this mean that "big hair" like the early sixties or the eighties, is making a comeback? When I was a girl I was so envious of the high school girls with their huge teased hairdos and their big boobs. I wanted to be like them! I got the boobs, but my hair is hopeless.

you know the old saying "what's old is new again" guess that goes for hair as well.

I haven't played with my bumpits much but am looking forward to. My hair is so flat on top-the length really drags it down!

Ok..I think it looks a bit like the ancient Mayan practice of making babies heads look cone shaped. Its a bit alien looking to my eye unless you have a long 60s flip and a head band.

Or the Coneheads from old SNL episodes. "France, France, we come from France!"

Do these work better than the semi-pliable, nylon mesh ones that are available for the same purpose? (I don't know what they're called, but they've been around awhile and come in light and dark colors also.)

OMG! I almost fell out of my chair reading this! Didn't think about it before, but now every time I see the commercial I'll also be imagining that scene! Thanks for the laugh, Shalimah!
