Hairstyles
hello!
How do you make your hair during the performance? I like most of all my loose long dark brown hair straight or just curled...but looking natural. I have a problem with my teacher, she is insisting that i have to make them up and curl, that it will look arabic on me,i dont undersatnd why,and i have to put in some sparkling clip or some flower, she thinks i m too unimpressive for arabic look. I know you dont see me,but is it really normal, that hair are good only done like that?I dont agree, but i m just a beginner and i respect my teacher,i m desperate because of this:(I have the competition next week, and i can think only about this.....1.I will feel bad with hair she wants and 2.She will be angry at me and it will also make me feel bad if i ll make hair like i feel good....Do i really think too tight and dont seperate life from the stage?

Re: Hairstyles
I think long, loose, natural hair is just wonderful. But perhaps your teacher better understands the judge's expectations of the competition that you will be in.
A headband that matches the costume, or some other hair accessory, can make the whole look more complete.

Re: Hairstyles
Your hair shouldn't end up hanging forward and hiding your face while you dance; that's not a good thing. No reason to restrict your hair otherwise, but that is important.

Re: Hairstyles
yes, I understand,I like only if i put up one side with some clip, but no like almost all the hair....i think loose hair looks so beautiful while dancing, but she thinks its ordinarily...i really wonder what other professionals think and do? When i tell her that i look at many dancers, also over here in concerts and competitions, noone has make like she wants for me,then she answer they all are ok,but me-i need like that,bu i feel like clown if i have a big flower or something like that...i have a gorgeous costume,i lok really good,i m so confused about this. And could you advice me something how do you make curls and keep them for a long time? Its so difficult for my long hair...

Re: Hairstyles
Although I think styled hair is as good as accessoried hair, I'd probably go with your teacher. Plenty of dancers look really good with some hair accessory, and the hair still flows and moves. Shoshanna of California is one of the ones I can think of who does flowers or headbands and looks good. I think the flower looks kind of romantic myself.
If you're in a competition, you might want to talk to a hair stylist about getting curls to stay. Nothing has gotten curls to stay in my hair, but my hair is very straight.

Re: Hairstyles
It sounds like your teacher just wants to see your 'costume' extend all the way to the top of your head. Each teacher has her own preference.
Maybe you can compromise. What if you curl your hair and pull one side back with something small and sparkly?

This is REALLY cute for a belldyancer, though I imagine it's a little extreme for someone who doesn't like to clip their hair up

A thin headband that doesn't hold all the hair back from the face can be used to decorate without altering your hairstyle:

That won't help if your teacher feels like your hair is going in your face too much, though. Pulling just the front back with a sparkly clip lets you have long loose curls AND the audience can see your face (and you won't subconsciously be reaching up to move your hair back, either)

Even a wide headband can be worn so that you can still enjoy the look of long loose locks but seem that extra bit 'dressed.'

Here's a very cute use of a flower, just twisted and pinned. You could use a much smaller one of course.

Re: Hairstyles
I was marked off points by a judge in my first competition because my costume did not include a matching headband. He wrote this straight out on the score sheet - "costume incomplete due to lack of accessories, i.e. headband."
One thing I like about headbands and other hair ornaments is that they can help keep your hair out of your face. I find it very distracting when a dancer has to clear hair off of her face a lot because it's stuck in sweat, lipstick, etc.

Shoshanna ~ Middle Eastern Dance Artist
I think Shoshanna has a hair ornament in every single photo.
And if your teacher wants your hair up, why not do a ponytail? It won't be quite the same as down, but there will be some movement in your hair.

Re: Hairstyles
I agree about what you wrote about hair in the face, its true, but it does not mean that i have to make al my hare to back, its so not understandable for me why she has an idea that its makes me look more arabic on the stage, I have watched a lot of videos, almost noone of dancer make all their hair up,it takes some beauty away I think...Yes and she also is worry about judges of course, because she thinks that in the last competition I didnt get in the final only because of hair, because she told me the technics was perfect what she is never saying...so,i dont know,im so confused...

Re: Hairstyles
According to the webpage it's a headband, I guess it's a thin headband decorated on one side only? I think you could make something similar with a thin headband and a sequin applique.
Maybe you and your teacher should sit down with some photos and talk about what she means by 'up.' Maybe she just wants it up off your face and behind your shoulders?

Re: Hairstyles
Loose hair can hang in your face, stick to your lipstick, and get in your mouth.
I used to have a teacher who yelled at me for leaving my hair loose. There were too problems, in her opinion: 1) She said I needed costuming for my head (meaning, something ornamental in my hair), and 2) She said my hair hid my face. It casts shadows, it gets in the eyes, it blocks the audience from seeing the face when it hangs forward, etc.
So I did 2 things to solve this:
1. I always try to wear some sort of costume accessory or jewelry in my hair. For example, I have a headband that matches my dress in this photo:
2. I had my hair cut with bangs, which I could style in different ways to prevent them from hiding my face. Depending on how I use hair spray, they might cover my forehead, or I might sweep them up off my forehead. The above photo shows the bangs swept off my forehead. The below photo shows the bangs being allowed to cover it:

Re: Hairstyles
yea,I think i ll print some pictures I really like and try to explain to her,but I think she will want it different anyway....oh,so stressing:) but if some judges really take some points off then i can understand her worries, but the thing is that have never seen any hairstyle like that for dancers,so why i have to be such an exception, like i m so ugly that i have to make my haire like i dont know who:)i feel naked without my hair, i miss something,i ll try to do my best:)

Re: Hairstyles
Thanks everyone for the pictures and ideas!
My teacher never told me to put up my hair or anything, but I love the ideas. I have super long hair and I don't want to put it all up (maybe my hair is my best feature, I wouldn't want to hide it!) so I might try a few things pictured here.
Anyone knows where I can get cute non-expensive rhinestone clips/pins/etc?

Re: Hairstyles
Are there any cheap-jewelry-and-handbag stores in your area? We have lots of them, mostly Asian owned (one shares a building with a sushi bar). Those places are loaded with cheap rhinestones, tiaras, sparkly headbands, flower clips -- and most of them also carry clip on ponytails and sparkly sequinned scarves as well!
Livucis, I think your hair is very pretty. Is your teacher giving you advice for your solo in the competition, or are you representing her studio?

Re: Hairstyles
Sometimes teachers just have strong personal preferences/opinions. It doesn't mean that what they say is the absolute truth!
BUT if she knows what the jury is looking for in a special competition, you might want to follow her advice. And then go on with your life afterwards and do what YOU want ..l;,
There are tons of Arabic dancers out there with no hair ornaments.
I mean, look at Suheir Zaki!
And DaVid posted a video here recently of a Lebanese dancer with poker straight, open hair.
I personally wear headbands or clips because my hair always falls into my face and I find it distracting.

And its not enough for her that i make one beautiful clip or something, ishowed her and thats how i have performed already, she will make me crazy, I will try to do as you say,i have thought about this, and then do how i want, but she will want me to do this then everytime, its crazy, especiallly if i feel bad.

Re: Hairstyles
If she's said to do as you want, then you should. You need to feel comfortable with what you're wearing so you can relax and dance well in the competition. If you feel that your hair is dancing with you, the judges will see that and it will add to your performance. If I were a judge, I'd give you extra points for using your hair in that way. I've seen dancers who do it beautifully.
Adding a little color and sparkle to your hair is a great idea.
It's different if you're in a group number dancing under her name or representing her studio. Then you need to be a 'team player' and follow her preferences.
For a solo, you can take advice from everyone, especially your teacher, but the choices you make affect only you. They're your choices to make. Most teachers won't get angry if you choose to do something different.

Re: Hairstyles
Luv~
I think that it is your teacher's personal opinion and that it is okay to dissagree with your teacher. I think some dancer's tend to "overdress" their hair and it borders on tacky and distracting. I prefer the more natural look and don't feel the costuming is incomplete without a hair accessory. Just my opinion.....
I tend to follow dancer's that inspire me.....right now it is Randa Kamel, Dina, Asmahan, Soraya and I rarely see them with hair accesories and they are very natural with hair and jewelry......(their hair is beautifully coiffed and professional looking, just not accesorized)
I agree hair is distracting if in the eyes or sticking to lipgloss and constantly being fidgeted with, so it is a good idea to prevent that somehow.
I like seeing different styles on the same dancer....one day it is curly, the next straight, oh now she had a little barret pulled to the side, now a small flower, etc........NOT hair accessory every single time.....blah!
Just my humble opinion.....

Re: Hairstyles
totally agree with kajmir666...but what you said about that i should do as i want-it was like a disappointment for her-like she wants only the best but i want to do worse and i dont understand anything, its so difficult to explain-i want to feel comfortable also in my mind, not only technics, but i won't feel so if i have something strange on my head or i know that my teacher now is looking at me and thinking how stuborn i am....dilemma:)

Re: Hairstyles
I definitely think you should do what you feel comfortable with.
I almost always put something in my hair. I My hair is just baby fine, and if I don't have some accessory in it, it gets in my face and it becomes a distraction.
I actually wonder how dancer who don't put anything in their hair do it. Sometimes, I put it up altogether, especially in the summer when it's extra hot.
For dancers with cool hair accessories, my first inspiration was Ansuya, but her look is very classic American cabaret:
ANSUYA.COM
Though she usually wears her hair down, I like this look Sandra has, with the simple metallic headband. I actually went out and found something like this and wear it a lot:
Sandra -- Bellydance Classes
Amar Gamal also does flowers and accessories in her hair, which I think look gorgeous:
