Ok, so who's done floor work with a fringe belt/skirt?

I wear those long fringe skirts/belts fairly frequently - but my rule about floorwork in them has been simple: "Don't".

However, I'm gradually doing more floorwork - so the two ideas are heading for a collision. .w.: Does anyone have any tips/experiences to share, either with demi-floorwork (essentially kneeling) or full-on down on the floor? I know the rule about "real" skirts (IN it, not ON it), but that's kinda hard with fringe skirts/belts. I've already gotten myself into trouble just kneeling in one, it LOVES to tangle in my toes...

hmm have you tried gracefully and discreetly "kicking" the skirt/fringe pieces away as you're getting up (know what i mean?). I had to this once uber discreetly for a troupe routine since my petal skirt was all up in my way. it was either that or risk stepping on it and pulling down my skirt altogether lol

eta: this was in regards to your question about kneeling

    Yea, I tried...

All it did was entangle the mess further - its probably what I get for doing a damn-fool stunt like kneeling in a fringe skirt in the first place! In the end, there was no hiding it, I had to break form and reach back there and untangle the mess. Its way worse than kneeling in the "regular" type skirts I'm used to (big 'Gypsy-style' skirts, I've never tried a petal skirt...).

I actually did this Friday night. I wore the same costume shown in my avatar, but put a fringe belt underneath since the slit is really high. I didnt do any extensive floorwork, but I did some kneeling backbends. While there was some tangle-age, because it was under my skirt it wasn't as visible. To get up, I extended one leg out, so it was sort of past the fringe, almost like a half split, then I shifted my weight out onto the front leg into a lunge and stood up that way. It worked, I got down and was able to get back up again.

    lol. same issue here ^^
the way i do it is, keep my feet in contact with the floor. dont let any of the strings get between your foot and the floor. cos then you're in trouble ^^

A way to splay it out a bit is do do a twirl or spin into the the kneeling move. That always kept it from ending up under my feet.

raises hand..yes i danced on plush carpeted floors and i swear those beads find ways to snag in the carpet and pull.

i found what worked best for floor work (or if i planned it) was wearing a few layers of circle skirts with multiple splits or even one of those sequined petal skirts over a pair of thick harem pants, and wearing a neckelmanns costume. the neckelmanns costumes i've owned have been rather bulletproof and really earned my respect for rolling around with them on..and usually i'd have something in hands like fire so it was impossible to reach down and adjust the skirts or beads.

coin belts may shift, same with coin scarves unless you've really anchored them but again those tiny links and sometimes that edge of the coin if not polished down will grab on to carpet threads and hook you to the rug :)

i tried a silk scarf once with the long fringe and it did ok but i was concerned the strands would tangle and ball up and then i'd have a clump of silk on my ass during the rest of the dance

neckelmanns and sturdy satin circle skirts get thumbs up from this rug crawler

If it were me I would have it all knotted up in a ball in no time, get my feet caught in it and generally make a mess.

    Good luck, Zorba!

*snarf*! It would sort of look like a poodle tail.

Ugh, I've had that one happen--I couldn't get my toes untangled and did the rest of the routine with seriously bent knees! The fringe skirt was one of those pretty ones with lurex threads throughout the fringe strands, but those seem especially tangle prone, and slightly sticky to boot. My solution was to braid the entire skirt. Every three strands became one thicker strand, finished with a tiny elastic. It was very time consuming and laborious but it also worked--no more tangling!
