Thread: Over-Moisturizing Accelerates Aging

What do you think of this?

B.S.? Or gimmick to try to get you to buy product? Thousands and thousands of women who look fantastic for their age due to moisturizing can't be wrong, can they??

I'm not sure what to make of this, as an avid facial slime ball, myself...

hmm i thought you were SUPPOSED to moisturize every day? does applying sunscreen count as 'moisturizing'? i would think it does, so how does that accelerate aging?

Well, for a long time they also told us that exfoliating on a regular basis would also accelerate the aging process. . .

Huh! I did not think that "moisturizers" were really a "source of hydration," but that they coat the skin with something, most often an oil-based something, that prevents loss of moisture. Hard to see how that would affect the internal process that's providing water to skin cells.

I unfortunately tend to break out from almost anything that puts a coating on my skin so I don't "moisturize" regularly at all even though I'm over 50 (and wear very little make-up except for dance performances) . . . so I kinda I wish it wuz true . . .

Argh!! It sounds similar to "drinking COLD water will cause your body to work harder to try to heat it, therefore helping you lose weight."

If I had the time and energy and resources to produce a "Beauty Mythbusters" show, I'd so be on top of it.

I moisturize and always have--I like to think my skin looks good in spite of gardening all the time and 70 is just over the hill for me. My aunt had lovely skin up until she died at 102 and she moisturized faithfully (Oil of Olay).

Moisturizing cured me of rosacea and keeps me from breaking out, so I don't think I care. Dr. Obagi has his own methodology and very expensive products that I doubt works for everyone.

But, if you're in an arid climate, have been on an airplane, maybe if you've just had surgery--in these conditions, he allows that you certainly might want to use moisturizers.....

Actually, from what he very carefully spells out his products will do--rapid cell turnover, irritate skin badly for a few weeks, etc--it sounds like I'd rather have lazy skin cells than overworked, burnt-out ones.

I've never heard of moisturizing the skin accelerates again. If that was the case, wouldn't we all have aged body skin from using lotion? All I know is that if I don't moisturize after cleansing, my skin is dry, tight and gets ashened.

Sounds like he's trying to sell his products. You notice in the article that the only reference to products for "anti-mosturizing" creams is his own.

Lazy cells!!! Hell, give em some caffiend!!! And then some chocolate!!!! If that doesnt work...those little red hot shot bottles are great!

I've always used Oil of Olay, too, and I don't look a day over 80 either!! Yay!!

I'm actually allergic to something in the...err...olay, so I am bereft of its magical properties. It always smells like my gran, though. Well, that and Tussy deoderant.

I get itchy dry, and I confess to having used Vaseline (the original) on my skin many times. Their moisturizer--blasphemy!--is actually pretty good, but I have to slather anything on several times before I get enough on. It's amazing what we do to our skin--does anybody remember Miracol? Yeeeowch!

It's a load of cr*p. Cells do NOT get lazy and stop....what happens on the surface of your skin is partially true for that, the skin is constantly rejuvenating and the older cells are pushed to the surface. That is where they are sloughed off when we wash our face (or exfoliate to speed up the process).

Moisturizers work by TRAPPING moisture in your skin, so you need to have damp skin to start with (by washing). Long-lasting moisturizers are better as we age because they keep the skin looking dewy for longer bits of time. Very little of our body's moisture actually goes into moisturizing our outer surface. Eating foods rich in Omega oils and staying hydrated helps keep deeper layers of skin supple but that's about it.

And, sunblock contributes to aging skin, spots, wrinkles, etc. which makes skin look bad. Just look at someone who spends a lot of time outside and you will see, especially someone older who has spent their whole life outside in the sun.

I've been moisturizing since I was 16 and I'm 47 now. Guess my skin has retired to Florida, eh?

That guy is full of himself and his product. Find something cheap that works for you, wash your face at night exfoliate when you need to and use sunscreen.

I don't believe it at all. How the holy hell can a moisturizer dry out your skin? Can't they find something real to talk about? Because this is just the nuts.

I think it sounds like total malarky. And these so called experts, how come they can never agree about stuff? Like one expert says eggs are horrible the other says you should have one every day. Also coffee and chocolate, these were once considered diet no-no's, now they are full of antioxidants and you should have them "in moderation" but in a year or two they'll change it again, just you wait and see! WTF? Now moisturizing is bad. I say eat eggs, drink coffee and moisturize to your hearts content. Ciao, Mavi

I don't know about it ageing you but certainly moisturing is NOT the key to youthful looks...if you don't strip away your natural oils when cleansing you can easily skip moisturing (some books even recommend only moisturing the 'dry' skin areas) and won't age more than if you did.

I don't really trust the "advice" or "expertise" of someone who is trying to get me to buy their product.

When I used to work as a skin consultant (years ago), the mantra was "you can never moisturize enough." Whatever you system gets too much of, it just flushes it out anyway.
