Home put together costumes...can be done or disaster??HELP NEEDED ASAP IM ON EBAY LOL
As someone who is still a beginner and who doesnt have much cash can you for haflas and things put together home jobs?
Ie this skirt on ebay is pretty and I would love it for practice as it is earthy and tribal in colour:
BELLY DANCE COSTUME SKIRT BORDO/BLACK SHINE, SIZE M NEW on eBay, also Belly Dancing, Women's Dancewear, Dancewear Dance Shoes, Clothing, Shoes Accessories (end time 30-Apr-09 20:14:47 BST)
Could I then put a tribal pom pom belt over and then find a black or silver tribal ATS coin bra and go accesories mad on the arms and stuff?
Advice needed asap before I end up buying stuff online that wont work :)
PS NOT NECESSARILY GETTING THAT SKIRT AS IT ENDS SOON JUST LOOKING FOR A 'WHAT IF' SCENARIO

I'm not a tribal dancer, but it seems to me like it might be too shiny for a classic ATS look like you are describing with the other items (tassel belt, coin bra, etc).
Also, looking at the photo I think the skirt is probably more sheer than you might expect--down near the bottom where there's a single layer of fabric, as opposed to gathered drapes, you can clearly see the mannequin's supports. So it would probably require some layering, or pantaloons/harem pants underneath, though it might not be a full enough skirt for the pantaloons look.
just my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth. If you can sew at all, or are willing to learn, it might be more cost effective to find fabric you like and then make your own skirts to start with.

It's not a very tribal-looking piece, but it's pretty.
I've honestly never understood the concept of a 'practice skirt' For me, practicing dance is hard work, often involving perspiration, and I don't dress up for it.
I always advice my students to go to several haflas or student recitals before they start buying costume pieces. There's just no substitute for seeing what the other students wear, it's really the only way to get a sense of what is/isn't really good costuming -- especially with e-bay sellers putting the word bellydance (or even pro!!) on all kinds of things none of us would ever wear!
If money is burning a hole in your pocket and you must spend some, buy music, videos, earrings, bracelets, or cute pants/tank tops to wear for class.

Its not for class its for me to use at home to get the feel of the ups and downs that you see alot in ATS (Name of this move anyone?) I want to see the whole affects in a skirt and not just my practise pants

hmmm...well my first thought is that this particular skirt is very shiny for ATS.
But from reading your posts it seems to me, that you are more attacted to what I would call a "tribal fusion" look than you are true ATS or ITS style.
And if that is so, then for the price it looks like a good deal and that you could use it as a nice base piece. That use could use for a tribareet look.
I would wear some sort of pant under it though ( it looks kind of sheer).
I'm with Lauren on practice wear, yoga pants and a t-shirt are your best bet.
But I do sometimes practice with a 10 yard gauze skirt that I bought cheap. Mostly because the movements look different with a Huge *ss skirt on. Not to mention its a good idea to get used to how to dance without getting a giant skirt caught under your feet.
You may want to check out Moondancebellydance.com - they often have sales - but I dont know what shipping to the UK would cost. So your best bet would be to ask around and see where local dancers get their gear.Last edited by gilbygil; 03-31-2009 at 03:36 PM. Reason: added some info about skirts

I'd recommend cotton or cotton mix for tribal preferably tiered, but with one frill at hem or even just a plain circle would do. Colours such as red, earthy or safe black pref.Want to be cheap get material from some where like "Al Kilo" in Liverpool and make or find a friendly crafty mate. Failing that look for the bargains on eBay: second hand good quality (check BHuz)is better than cheapo see-through. Beware the distance factor..postage and duties.
www.sakkara.de are a good website, Whispering Eyes in the UK have lovely Indian skirts. the best styles (but not cheap) are Flying Skirts Tribal BellyDance Costumes: Welcome to Flying Skirts Tribal Belly Dance CostumesLast edited by lizajuk; 03-31-2009 at 05:17 PM.

Just a note about the seller .... I have bought a couple of costumes and a skirt from her when she was selling on Ebay as "Ameyrna" and the workmanship is very good. She uses acrylic stones rather than crystal (at least on lower-end items) and accents with costume jewelry, but the overall look and quality is really nice. It won't fall apart!

It's very pretty but it is completely transparent, and it also looks as if it's not particularly long either. Unless you've got a 34 inch hip (since it appears intended to be worn at the waist not the hip, and that's the maximum stretch) and are not very tall, I wouldn't.

That pic looks off, like it was enhanced, so I wouldn't really know what I was getting (could just be a bad picture).
Just go to a thrift shop, where you can actually see and touch and try on. You can pick up a cheap skirt to practice in (practice not stepping on it or tripping), and you can always modify it later.

It's a very pretty skirt. The description says "THE FABRIC IS SEE-THROUGHT". So you'll want to wear something under it; unless you're planning to recreate a cheesy almost-naked 1970s LP cover :)
It would work for a Tribal Fusion look, or maybe Tribaret, but not ATS. ATS costumes feature natural fabrics with an Earthy look. Tribal Fusion and Tribaret looks can use the shiny synthetics.
I'm long past the "dressing up to practice is fun!" phase, but every beginner seems to love to do that.
Dancing in a skirt is different from dancing in plain yoga pants. Skirts fly up in spins and can sneak under feet when the knees are really bent.
I think any student that plans to dance in a skirt needs to practice in a skirt - ideally, in the skirt they plan to wear for performance.
So my suggestion is to pick the skirt that you'll want to use for performance, and invest in that. If you just want something cheep cheep for "play", check your local thrift stores and flea markets.
