Thread: Does anyone here make 10 yard skirts????

Hi Everyone,

I was going to buy a 10 yard skirt but the cost with shipping would be £60. This is great for a pro skirt and for performance etc but I just want one to wear so I can get used to wearing a skirt and so I can see how my moves look in the skirt. I have seen ATS uses alot of moves where they actually swish their skirts and stuff so i want something to practice in.
I was wondering how much the material would be for a UK size 10 10 yard skirt? In Black and how much people charge to make them?

I actually find the best tribal skirts to be the 25 yard ones. Fabulous swish in those.

What does 10 yard and 25 yard refer to? The length of the hem, is my guess. I use 9 yards of fabric and make a 2 full circle skirt, so if it's a yard long C=PI*D would be 2*PI*2, so that would be a little over 12 yards. So is a 25 yard skirt a 4 full circle skirt?

Most 25 yard skirts are tiered so that there's less fabric in the top than the bottom. Mine has 4 layers - the bottom edge is 25m around the hem. That's ALOT of gathering!!! but oh so pretty.

...also, be sure you get a 25 yarder out of a light fabric, like a cotton gauze... otherwise they are DARN HEAVY!!

As a previous poster said: the doing of making a skirt is easy, but has many gathers. If you've done this, you know what I'm talking about. Get a book on CD or watch/listen to a movie while you do it. It simply takes time and patience.

Personally, I've done about 4 tiered skirts in my life and none were 25 yards, and I thought that the prices I found for purchasing one were fair considering my hatred of me personally doing the work. More expensive for sure. But fair.

And yes, get gauze or a light-light-lightweight cotton (is it called lawn?). We wear enough, dancing, that weighs us down. No need to get crazy with a huge and heavy skirt.

I also vote for 25 yds. Fantastic swooshing! Wow! Just wonderful! (I have no experience with a 10-yard.)
