    The Undie Conundrum/The Derriere Debacle

Inquiring minds would like to know.

I've recently acquired a number of costumes with sizeable cutouts at the hip. Now, given that this is such a popular style, I'm curious to know how all of you handle the obvious caveat of undergarments. They used to make those thongs with the clear sides, but I can't seem to find them. Some girls stitch undies into their costumes, but something about that kind of bothers me (unless you can remove them to wash them).

We ALL know Raqs Beaver is not an option...so WWBD?

buy some regular panties thong, or what ever style is most comfy for you while dancing. Buy some clear bra straps, cut the sides of the panties off and sew the clear bra straps to the sides.

    Other options

    - find a pair of flesh coloured mesh underwear. Line the obvious areas and leave the sides.

    - line the cut outs with either flesh coloured mesh or mesh which matches the skirt.

    - Wear matching bike shorts so that those show through the cut outs.

Stupid question, but how do you get a needle through those thick rubbery clear straps? This doesn't sound incredibly easy. Is there a type of clear strap that is easy to sew on?

This does sound like a good idea, though!

You can buy clear elastic on a spool at Jo Ann Fabric. I got some when I realized my meleya dress needed a non-visible strap on the shoulderless side.

ETA: Like this stuff: Clear Elastic 3/8 Wide 5 Yards It's very thin and not hard to sew through at all.

Regular sewing machine will do it. Just need patience and the right tension setting

Dear SatinWorship, I sewed nude lycra into my cutouts--worked great and nobody knows the difference! I keep a couple of yards on hand for such things.

Nude lycra only works if your skin is the color of the industry "nude" standard. if its any lighter or darker...

My instructor swears by gold underwear. Of course it depends on one's skin tone. She's quite fair, and I remember her telling me that she finds gold "blends" more for her and is much less obvious than "nude".

I attach all of my clear straps with a very sharp needle and perseverence (from the machine challenged).

Taking this a step further, what about clear straps that come with convertible bras? I imagine the straps themselves can be bought. They have a hook on the end so the straps could be sewed actually onto the costume and a loop could be sewed into the underwear, making them removeable to be washed.

Caveat: I've never done this and I can barely turn on a sewing machine despite my best intentions so I won't be offended if y'all call me crazy.

This could work if you could make the straps short enough.

I have a great dress which didn't have any shoulder support on the built in bra, so I did this very thing. As amber said, it might work if you can get the straps short enough.

One other option which I say this weekend was to line all the cut outs with mesh which matched or contrasted with the costume. It gives it a different look.

How about cutting the sides off and putting little snaps inside the costume and on the undies? That way you can take them out to wash them?

i put double sided tape to my underwear and to the costume so that it doesn't move mid-performance.

nude colored spanx. I believe they come in all skin tones as well. But the thigh length ones are fantastic for this. I ended up buying the ones by Donna Karan because they're low-rise, but any can always be folded over and then safety pinned to costume.

Otherwise, nude-colored swimsuit material works great for sewing behind cutouts. This also comes in a variety of tones and is so soft on the skin!

Does this surprise you, my dear?

I should call the Fugly Costume Superstore and ask one of their wardrobe consultants how they would handle this problem: "I've got just the fix you need, honey - here's a pair of scissors to make the cutout bigger!!! It's ALL about showing your goodies. Think Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan!"

Or maybe I could ask the Touchy-Feely New-Agey BD sect (here I'm only referring to extreme cases, NOT those who subscribe to new-age ideology or quietly apply such philosophies to their dancing): "BD is about liberating your inner goddess, just like the ancient Californians did! Let your yoni BREEEEEEEEEEATHE!!!!!!!!"

Either way, I think I have a couple of good starting points here. I kinda like the idea of snapping undies into place, as I tend to curse sewing machines with my mere presence alone...

Well, I almost called it the Coonever Conundrum, but then I forgot that coonever is a word my college roommates and I made up, and nobody on here would know what I was talking about.

I am honored to receive this nomination.
