Thread: would you be interested in half circle veils with trim to weigh them down

yes..post happy today, attributing it to staying up late last night watching dance videos..g.:

The first double veil I learned was with the 2.5 yard size and they were a heavy satin material. My first instructor had a heavier silk pair that she wouldnt let anyone touch but she finally let me play with them and I loved them..they were 8mm possibly heavier silk (it's been a while) I think they may have been charmeuse and they had a thin row of sequins on the edge

I've also worked with the tissue lame' veils that had a sequin edge and really liked them

Of course these are better for stage dance as the sequins can cut someone in the audience ..but overall is there any interest for heavier silk half circles with trim? I suppose it wouldnt have to be sequins. Might make a pair and see how they move..

I think sequin trim looks pretty, but I have had way too many sequin-in-hair disasters!
Maybe just some beads to catch light and weigh the veil down?
My wirey long hair gets stuck on everything though. Maybe other dancers don't have this problem.

you have gorgeous hair! yeah i get sequins stuck on things too..flying sequins would definitely require some arm space and maybe a ponytail

Jes, I have a whole bunch from Ghanesh Bazaar (spelling?) (the prior owners, they used to vend at Rakk West, sold hip scarves and costumes made from saris and colorful veils, tie-dye, triple color-- they are not silk, I don't know what fabric they are, but they have like a gold lame (?) border, like a ribbon all around -- my students really like them for learning double veil 'cause there's "something to hold on to" -- they are easier to grip. I would LOVE to try a pair of your 1/2 circs with something like this. Nothing--NOTHING is as beautiful as AKAI silks when spinning--this might be a great combination. Sequins feel too heavy IMO except for entrance veils.

I like the gold ribbon (or I once had a beautiful purple one edged in silver ribbon too).

I agree, gold or silver ribbon edge is much better than sequins.

I have sequin edged 3/4 circle Lame' veils - the trim works well. I personally wouldn't want my silk 1/2 circles edged with anything, it would ruin the lovely float that they have. Again, this is just MY preference for MY veil style - others may very well enjoy something like you propose!

I would love to try the silk with trim. I have the tri color poly with trim and they are awesome to work with but not as beautiful as the silk. I would also like to try 4 yd 1/2circle veils and 3/4 circle veils (in the heavier silk of course). Just a few more idea's for ya!

I would try it! It would help me find the edge while spinning and trying to put the two together again.

Petite Jamila's mom had once contacted me about making veils like this that would be exclusively sold thru them at PJ workshops (and BDSS) but my concern is, when I dye the fabric the ribbon may discolor. It would be much more cost effective to have the veils pre-sewn with the ribbon on them and then i dye them

more:

1) would you care if the ribbon was discolored

2) would you want the ribbon on the top straight edge of the veil or all along the curve

3) I'm tempted to say I'd do this with the smaller half circles instead of the big ones..I can't fathom the thought of weighing down the super light silk veils with a ribbon (but I'm a light silk purist) ..might work on heavy silk though.

4)how about just a heavier hem along the entire veil, one to help you find the edge on top and the hem along the curve to weight the sucker down? if i could have them made with a heavier hem made of a thick silk or something then it would dye nicely

just some thoughts, I love making new TOYS :)

am going to have some silk charmeuse veils made to fly around and see how they work..I played with a large hc once and it would be nice as an entrance veil and/or framing and it did move very nice but they'd be a serious workout to do doubles with.

ps Zorba i still have a pair of tissue lame' veils made from Connie (who makes veils for Alyne), they have multi color pailettes on the edge..i have to dance with them in a very large space 'cuz getting whacked with a paillette would HURT but you should see how it shows up on video..the light catches the hem and they sparkle
