making a straight panel skirt from crepe de chine silk...Ezma?

I'll bet Ezma will know :)

How much fabric and is it feasible to make a straight panel skirt from a crepe de chine silk?

Am imagining this style skirt (thanks TanyaLV)..a straight panel skirt over a chiffon plain skirt (if that is what I'm seeing)

Using hand painted fabric like this ruana (of course I can't cut the ruana that would be blasphemy but I have yardage of it so I can paint enough to make panels and then maybe extra for something else..bra cover? vest? ..some to think of it I could make enough for a belt base and choli vest, sleeves, whatever

so the overall effect would be a wildly painted fire panel skirt over a black chiffon skirt (or harems)

is this do-able and is anyone interested in a swap where I paint and you sew and I'll make one for you too? (ps I can never PLAN these designs they are all painted and come out very different ..I can aim to use the colors you want but the paints work on their own :)

It could work. I had this chiffon panel that I sold and I miss it. I think the key is a little weight at the bottom with beading or sequin decoration to keep it down and nice when you're in place, not too much so it moves when you move. Here's the old post with pic and measurement of panel.

I think this skirt is a circle-type. Maybe only 3/4, though. She wore a similar one this week:

I'm very inspired by this - the fabric itself is gorgeous, flows well, maybe they added some sparklies to it?

are you snowed with activity right now? how much yardage would your typical panel skirt require? I can also get my paws on a stretch crepe de chine that might work really well for bra/top stuff

it would be a DIY kind of project until there was enough interest in them to order a large bulk order from a supplier.but to start with i can work on silk crepe yardage and it would not be too expensive at all

a painted veil could be made to complement it

I can do ombres as well but some of the painted ones would make really original type pieces. the fire one would do well with a black bra/belt or a coin set for example

here's some samples of other works I've done..the ruanas are priced 99 to 169 because I work with a few high end boutiques who buy them wholesale so I have to keep my price even with them..but if I were to paint an unfinished garment piece so that costumers can sew it I can adjust the pricing and probably make them pretty cheap. Let me go remind myself of the cost of the yardage and report back.

ps yes those 3/4 skirts on DWTS ohhh i love those..i'd be tempted to make a skirt like that from charmeuse. If you guys sew it I'll dye it.

oh someone asked me to post another pic of the fire painted one cuz they are all freaking out on the face :)

now i don't see Jesus i see a wizard but hey.

    others:

Autumnatic would do well with a teal costume or autumn, copper, chocolate..

    something in Sunrise merkaba colors

a rich red purple swirled gawd that with a purple neckelmanns whooo

and if you go to this link, the first ruana in the photo on the left, is Shanti

    stretch crepe runs about 10.95/yard

crepe de chine varies from about 4/yard to 12/yard depending on the weight. The 30mm weight sounds appealing. Might still need beading or sequins or something at the bottom to hold it down

    an example I found says:

Measure your hips. Say your hips are 40". Divide that in half. So each panel will be 20" wide and as long as your preferred length. So say 36" long.

You will need to make a pattern with 2 rectangles 20" x 36". This works well for brocade, lace, and heavier fabrics.

from here; Tutorial: Super Simple Belly Dance Skirt Fits Any Size

I could make them out of two yards which is 72 inches and thats actually the standard size for sarongs..so this could be a multi purpose endeavor. hrmmm.. it could be kept and used as a sarong or cut into panels. I suppose a halter top could be made out of the stretchy crepe for a few bucks..gawd that would rock as beach evening wear.

must go cool head in bucket of water, but wow this could be done easily (and pretty cheap)..they would take a bit longer than the ombres because i only have one silk stretcher and the silk has to remain on it over night. for ombre styles i could whip those out like veils.

ombres can in fact be dyed along with a veil, perhaps.
for example if you have a Sirena ombre panel skirt, so its dark blue, turquoise, then white, you can wear it over a turquoise chiffon skirt (and the panels would help hide panties) and wear with a turquoise bra/belt..the veil can be Sirena as well or just two colors like turquoise and white so it's not too matchy but goes with

someone hold my hands before i go buy a crap load of crepe

If I was making 2 panels 20x36", I would actually only buy 1 yard of fabric as long as it was at least 40" wide. And yes, I always put something on the bottom to give it weight and "swing".

yup that would be an even cheaper option..the previous one was allowing for extra fabric should a choli/halter top be needed , but yes on the conservative side it would take one yard and yes the fabric comes in 45 inch and sometimes 55 inch wide

I'd be interested in a panel and matching stretch crepe de chine gypsy top but I'm totally swamped with work right now until mid-May. love this idea though!!
