Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
I am currently drooling over a yellow bedleh I saw. It's a sunny yellow with turquoise accent color. I'm dark hair/dark eyes & pretty fair skinned so don't know if it'd look good on me. My husband's thoughts were: Well, you're pretty pale...it would stand out on you. I didn't know if that's good or bad - stand out as in GP could see me, which is good...or stand out as in OMG! That bedleh is disgusting! ?
Any other pale dancers here & do you stay away from yellow or embrace it?
I want this bedleh, but not if it's going to look sick on me. I'd wear a turquoise skirt with it, & turquoise jewelry if I can find some, to try & tone down the yellowness of it...
edit to add: Or does it partially come down to if you can rock the costume? Some colors may not be great on dancers but their personality lets them get away with it?Last edited by TexasRuya; 04-12-2009 at 06:28 PM.

Ooooh, yellow and turquoise will be pretty. I think it really depends on the shade of yellow. I know I can get by with some of the sunnier, lemon yellows, and I'm about as pale as it gets. :D

think you have to factor in skin tone, not just fairness-level. also tone of yellow, amount of accent colors and of course your hair color. as a blond with a tan, i could wear yellows and oranges but not now as a pale brunette, unless there is a strong presence of a cool accent color.
my best advice it to try it on if possible

Re: Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
Yah, that's the problem, I don't have access to try it on. And some shades of yellow make me look jaundiced, which I'd like to avoid. And then there are some colors that when you wear them they don't look bad, but they don't do anything for you, ya know? Want to avoid that, too. Strong jewel tones look good on me, but pale yellow I can wear. This bedleh is not pastel, though. It's a lemony yellow. I dunno...I'd hate to get it then it looks sick. Or makes me look sick I should say, lol.

Re: Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
I just sold a yellow and turquoise costume. I am very, very fair skinned and blonde and the color combo looked great on me. The turquoise accents in it really blended well with my pale, cool toned skin. If it were solid yellow I don't think it would have looked as good. I was sad to part with it but the shape of the belt did not work with my figure. I am thinking I might order this color combo again some time in the future in a different style.

I can't wear yellow but other fair skinned people can. It just depends on your undertone. You need to hold it next to your skin and see if it looks nice.
You can get away with more when you are wearing a lot of makeup, but as far as I'm concerned, if a costume colour makes your unmade up face look ill, you probably don't want it.

Re: Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
As an incredibly pale individual, I've never been able to wear yellow without looking like I was going into liver failure. Earlier this year, however, I tried on and purchased the gorgeous specimen below from bhuzzer Andrea2. I think the key with this one was that the yellow was a bright lemon color with no gold undertones. So a "cool" yellow as opposed to a "warm" yellow, if that makes any sense.

That's exactly how I look with some yellows, jaundiced! Your yellow costume looks to be about the same shade as the one I'm drooling over, and the turquoise accents are about the same shade (if not deeper/brighter/more electric) as that necklace you're wearing in the pics. And we have similar coloring, too - dark hair/eyes, pale skin.
That's it! If the cup measurements will work then it's mine.

If you have a blue undertone you might get away with it. If it tends to be a little limey, forget it. Yellow is a funny color. I tend towards being olive skinned because I'm a mixed bloodline and I have a hard time with yellow.
Laura, I remember that costume! It was the one everybody wanted to steal from you, and the hit of the season!!

I am a big fan of yellow and honestly believe anyone can (and should
) wear it. There was a thread like this a little while ago that I believe Dunyah started and there was some good advice for finding the right yellow for your skin tone on it.

Re: Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
Well, I passed on the yellow in the end. Supposedly it's not lemony, it's 'golden yellow'. Looks bright lemon in pictures, but my silver bedleh looked white in their pics, too, so it could very well be more on the golden side & just look lighter in the picture. I decided not to chance it & deal with the hassle of sending it back in case it didn't look good. So I went with a green set instead ..g.:

Which one was it? And which one did you end up getting? (curiosity)

Sorry, it's one of the Hanan bedlehs on Dahlal, called Sunshine Sparkle. I got the Summer Meadows instead - Jessica took my order & said they were selling fast but would be getting more in soon (in smaller sizes though).

nothing in yellow for me. I'm a white white white girl. Pale as it gets. I have to stick to dark jewel tones.

I have a problem with reds. I am a winter, so anything that is orange or has orange in it just doesn't look good.
I agree that it is difficult to see what color you are actually buying when you are ordering online or even in the stores, because of the lighting.

Re: Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
When I was at Tarik Sultan's gala show back in January, there was a dancer there from Tennessee who was blonde and fair. She wore a gorgeous yellow costume and it looked really great on her. I acutally thought it complimented her hair and complexion.
Not every costume looks good on everyone but I don't think yellow looks bad on fair or pale skin at all.

Just the reds without the orange in it. Tomato red is a no-no...
Or, reds with words like warm or golden. They usually have a warm tone to it, when we should wear a cool tone. Same goes for other colors, if it is a warm or golden pink it is a no-no. My mother drives me nutts with this stuff.

Re: Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
Funny, I'm rocking an Easter Egg yellow sweater as I type this, with my dark chestnut hair, blue eyes, and the faintest beginnings of a tan, and I'm now wanting a yellow cossie like nobody's business! It's more like a buttercup/canary/Cadbury Mini Egg color, so I think that's why it's working.
Personally, I'd steer clear of anything in the mustard-to-school bus color range. Any hint of orange or olive REALLY tends to bring out that jaundiced look, while creamy pale yellows (with or without accents) tend to be much more universally flattering.
Also, it definitely helps to get a teensy weensy bit of a tan, whether it's from L'Oreal or an afternoon on the beach. Certain costumes in my wardrobe (the orange, white and gold ones, namely) are off-limits from October through March/April for that reason.

Re: Yellow costume + fair skin = Yuck?
I have extremely, extremely fair skin, very dark hair and blue eyes. My undertones tend towards pinkish or blue and I have never been able to wear yellow. However orange tends to be very flattering on me. You might be able to get away with it if you have different undertones or hair color than I do.
