Circle skirt from striped fabric. . .

Ok, so my mom haunts the bargain bins at Joanns and buys me any fabric that she thinks I might use for something. . . lol This weekend she brought me a box of chiffons. Two are perfect for veils (and one even matches a costume I have almost finished!) and the other is this weird, but amazing, sheer green thats mottled (almost tie died looking, but in rows) - its almost striped running lengthwise along the fabric. It looks like water rippling in a way.

I would LOVE to make a circle skirt from this (I have a plan for a whole costume revolving around this stuff now), but have never done one out of something with any sort of pattern. Has any one made something like this? How'd it turn out? Do you have pics???

    Thanks!

My friend makes skirts from crazy prints and they always seem to turn out nice. Here is an example of one that she made using striped rainbow chiffon. You can see how the stripes are almost horizontal in the middle of each panel then turn vertical towards the edges.

Thanks Fayrouz - that pic kinda helps. . . my stripes are a bit more obvious, but I DO like the way that looks.

And thanks to Shira, I have seen your instructions (in fact, its your instructions that I've been using for years!) I just havent tested the waters with stripes or geometric prints or anything for one of these ;-)

Horizontal stripes are not my friend. They make my hips look bigger than they are.

I like 'em because they look very retro. To each her own, right.

It may be worth looking into making a gored skirt, rather than doing the traditional half-circle design in order to maintain some of the directionality of the stripes.

For a gored skirt, you can cut out alternating trapezoid shapes from the fabric and get a maximum yield. (I need to sketch this to explain properly, I am afraid - I can do geometry with pen and paper, but not with a keyboard.)

Thanks - a gored skirt is definitely an option (I've done those before too), my only issue with this is that when sewing chiffon on the bias I always manage to get some stretch going on and it wumples weird. hehe

Thanks everyone for advice and pics. . . if I can only come up with a couple more yards of this I might just give this a try ;-)
