Wearing head-pieces - hair jewelry and great hair-dos

I'm thinking I want to try some different stuff, hair-wise and I thought I'd ask for ideas. What are some of your favorite hair-dos for belly dance? Particularly those incorporating head pieces, hair jewlery, falls and other extra special dos. All styles of belly dance welcome.

Please post photos. I'll be looking too, so when I find cool photos I'll post them here.

This video clip posted in another thread is what got me thinking about this topic. I like this hairstyle:

Although, I have long hair I still use a ponytail that clips on and put my hair in a bun. This is my favorite do, it stays out of my face.

    :)

Can't wait to see what others post! I love hair dos!

I'm a huge fan of the faux-ny tails. They make getting ready for a gig that much easier (besides I'm a little dumb about hair care and me and my styling tools don't really get along.)

I've seen lots of dancers in NY use flowers (real or fake), and feathers seem to be making an appearance somthing like this is really nice. Also clips that have feathers and flowers

I'm also a fan of tiny sparkly headbands. I think they look nice with hair down or and updo. I'm not a huge fan of the head pieces that come with costumes and I often like to use headbands like these instead.

Wedding hair combs also look nice and hold the hair off your face, but I've not had good experiences with them staying in my hair.

Etsy.com is like crack for me so sometimes I browse around and look for things I can recreate at home. My weapon of choice these days is a glue gun ..l;,

I like braids down your back or one on either side in front. Another thing I really like(but don't know how to do) is when people have like a leather or fabric that the wrap around the base of their ponytail or lower down it's like a few inches long. I can't really explain it but I'll try to find a pic.

That pony tail is so cute. I'm going to look at the other links. The hair in this clip is great too, once she gets rid of the hat:

Shems, some of those vintage photos look like the headpiece could be created from a necklace. The challenge would be keeping it in place for an active dancer, however.

They have some cute hairstyles on their site. Like this one:

But do you think they would be safe to dance with? They wouldn't fall out embarrassingly? My hair isn't that long right now either, so I'm wondering how to put it all together with a fall...

Re: Wearing head-pieces - hair jewelry and great hair-dos

I love hair decorations. :) I wear 3/4 caps or ponytail falls whenever I dance. I have two boxes full of flower hair clips that I make for about 30 cents each by going to Michaels and getting a spray or two , of flowers, clipping them off, and hot gluing them to a good quality hair clip (the 2 prong kind for holding pin curls) that I get at the beauty supply store. I've branched out into feathers. sometimes I'll add a big jewel. I have one lovely piece that has two sprays of feathers with a big vintage rhinestome pin between them.

for the ponytail falls, have you seen those little bun tiaras? they're about the size of my palm. they slip in front of the fall perfectly and are super cute.

for a big show I might get glued-in extensions. somewhere I'll have to find a pic where I had the wavy extensions pinned up in loops and whorls with about 30 silk orchids on my head. it was very Midsummer Nights Dream. :)

My favorite "piece" right now is a headband made to look like braided hair...I put it in and bobby pin it in place. It has residual glitter spray on it so it sparkles a bit (word of advice-don't ever use that stuff inside your house!!!!!)

Sometimes I just use regular side combs but no other adornment. I'm afraid of stuff falling out and me stepping on it (I lost a barrette during an ice show and it almost killed me-luckily I was the only one that got tripped up but I banged my knee).

I wish I did, I will see about getting my do done later today and snap a photo. It won't be the whole she-bang cause I just washed my hair and don't want to spray it all up but it can give you a good idea. I think the hairband is made by Goody...I bought it at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.

ETA-in my avatar photo I'm wearing it but it's hard to see (and that day it was raining so my hair sort of fizzled). It's nice and keeps the hair out of my face.

ETA (again) here is the link for my headband. I really like this, it has an elastic band underneath to keep it snug (not tight) and I believe it comes in different colors. Plain & simple but sometimes that is enough. (excuse the way I look I did not put any makeup on and my rosacea is FLARING this morning!!!!)

That is really a great idea. Now I want to try it. :) Thanks... I found some information on this... Holpefully, this is what you are referring too. I am all for keeping my hair out of my face, and what a great way to do it. Even on any day!

^This one I think you can do yourself. I found a tutorial on one.

I always wear my hair free-flowing, to prevent Flying Muskrat Incidents. (Was it Azhia who coined that term?) Those hairpieces, just like chicken cutlets, really would seem to pose a liability ..g.:.p::

For those times when I want extra sparkle and fun with minimum effort, I use those little hair jewels that you can buy at dance supply stores. They're basically a 1/2" rhinestone with velcro backing that sticks to your hair, so you can even make your own. Great for nightclubs and other dimly lit, funky venues!

I like those little "tack-on" jewels, but prefer the ones that spiral into place (seem to stick better and I don't seem to lose as many). I have some that are pearls-very pretty!

I'll have to practice those braids!

I did go up to Sally to get some BUMP-ITS but was out of luck, THAT Sally didn't have them, and we (son & I) were ready to head on home (didn't feel like running to the other end of town). I'll pick some up this coming week. The girl at Sally did say EVERYONE is giving them rave reviews!

I saw the spirals at my local dance supply shop - that sounds like a teriffic ideas! I always seem to lose crystals, with all my head tosses and my frequent and luxuriant hair touching a la Faten Salama. Now there's a solution! ..g.:

I have some of the spirals that I wore at my sister's wedding. I hadn't thought about using them for dance. The braid headband is cute. It is reminding me that I also have rhinestone hair pins. Any of you ever do hair pin dos?

I do, although they look very thirties/cabaret. I found it very helpful to have some little "extra hair" hairpiece at he back to make a tousled bun (or 2) at the back. Then add a decorated wide hairband or flower clips or vintage rhinestone hairclips, but large. It helps to have wavy hair or curl your hair so it doesn't look flat and ballerina like. It's a fun and pretty easy updo.

Only when I'm skating-don't like a lot of hair flying in my face then. I have found that for bd, the only hairstyle that hasn't worked out well is a ponytail when doing veil work. That pony just reaches right out and grabs my veil!!! Not sure how to work around that one, unless my arms magically get longer!

I just bought a headband at Target the other night that was wrapped in a brown ribbon that matched my hair (one of those zig zag shaped ones witht the combs that come out the back to hold better). I ran home and glued some crystals on it so that it looks more like I just have floating crystals in my hair.
I can't stand my hair in my face when I dance and I am a total head sweater so it ends up sticking to my face.

Yeah they are safe to use as long as you don't do hair flips. Currently I have a mid length A-line style and I use it pretty often. I anchor it into place with 3 heavier bobby pins and it stays in place. The secret is getting the right amount of hair over the bumpit... you still have to backcomb a little bit to camoflauge it but when it's in it stays.

I think you totally could use this with a 3/4 cap fall and you'd be fine.

    Darn... I wish we still lived in the same city so we could get together and play BELLYDANCE HAIR!!!,r:;,r:;
