The eyes have it? Pictures.*opinions plz*
I got this new eye kit today & played with it tonight. Did one eye, complete with my mondo lashes. Took two pics with just the nightstand lamp to get an idea of what I might look like under club/lower lighting, and one one pic in regular overhead light. Only other makeup I have on is a little base and a little blush. Oh and some brow powder.
Please critique. Be gentle, but please be honest. I don't want to look like scary bellydancer. Or Clockwork Orange bellydancer. Alternatives to this are welcome also. Eye makeup has never been my forte & I don't want to look like some dancers I've seen in the past who were trying to look 'exotic' by piling it on waay too much/too heavy. Anyway...

I like it too! There isn't any messiness, which I must say happens to me too often.

Very nice. Enough make-up to see your features from a distance but not drag-queen heavy.

LOL! Drag queen is what I was afraid of, that or just looking too dark/raccoon eyes.
What if I added a little pop of bright color in with it (like blue, green, or purple, etc.) on the lid? Or should I leave it alone? I felt like I looked harsh/colorless, but I definitely do not want to go for the drag queen/Divine look.

Re: The eyes have it? Pictures.*opinions plz*
Thank you!
It's the Bare Minerals eye kit, Rocker Eye. I have one of their Smokey Eye kits, but it hasn't work well for me. This one does, partly because the shades used are better suited for me, but mostly I think because the brush that comes with it is really good. One end is tapered/conical & firm so it kind of acts like a marker when you dip it in the eye power. The other end is rounded but short & stubby to pat on color over the eyelid. The eye shadows in this kit are a lot smaller than in the other kits & it's more than the others, but if it works well, I'll go buy another one just to have on hand (can't get the colors by themselves in regular sizes).

Re: The eyes have it? Pictures.*opinions plz*
It is not waterproof, but I can tell you I got some on my hands & it did not come off as easily as I thought it would. Soap & water didn't remove it all the way so I had to rub w/the hand towel when drying my hands afterwards to get more of it off. I don't scrub my face to remove makeup, I used jojoba oil on a cotton swab - melts eye makeup right off. So dunno how well it'd wash off the face. Also dunno how dance/sweat proof it is, I haven't danced in it yet.
It comes with a shiny black powder that's the liner (called Black Leather), a base color for the lid in a muted metallic grey/silver (called 1980s), and a black glitter/glittery powder for the outer corner (called Rock Star). And the brush.
I will be trying it with a bright color, as soon as I find one I like. I'm thinking green. Or pink. Or purple. ..l;,Last edited by TexasRuya; 04-15-2009 at 07:33 PM.

Fabulous. Very retro and stylish and it suits you enormously. You look like Young Jamila Salimpour with those eyes!!!
Excellent brow, too, btw.

I like it on you-in both lights actually. Nice work on the brow too. Not too overpowering.
It's hard to judge your eye shape from a picture, but what about your crease? If you have a padded eyelid, maybe just a sheer hightlighter on the lid, maybe a candle glow (depending on your coloring) If you have a well defined crease, maybe a bronze as another poster said. Or even a dark, smokey plum, used sparingly, in the crease. Or, you could just leave it as it is in the photos. I think it looks really good.
PS What is that kit? I wanna try!!!!!

Wow..w.: Thanks Zum! Now if I just had a young Jamila's body & could dance & play zils half as well ..l;,
Hookednovice, it's Bare Minerals' Rocker Eye kit. Ulta carries it. Sephora might as well, since they carry the Bare Minerals stuff, too.
Last night I thought I looked harsh. Tonight looking at the pics, it doesn't even look like me, it looks like someone else. Guess I'm right, it's not 'me' it's 'Ruya' ..g.:. I'm liking it better tonight if I look at the pics as it being someone else & not me. Not scary. A bit retro & almost kinda sweet (if I do say so myself). Think I'll keep it. Still gonna experiment with some color, though.Last edited by TexasRuya; 04-15-2009 at 11:57 PM.

Well I think it looks great. But for stage lighting you would need more makeup in general, and although you have lovely eyes and have done a really good job, you may need even more on the eyes for stage lighting. Hae a go at using a darker shadow to contour slightly (it doesn't have to be really dark, sometimes just a bronzer does the trick), and a little highlighter in the browbone.
I remember being in a play at school when I was 11 and the drama teacher made us all put little dots of red in the inner corners of our eyes. And I can't remember why. I'm not an expert on makeup for stage lighting, more for photographic work, so if anyone knows the answer, do tell! Azhia, where are you?

The dot of red supposedly draws people's attention to your eyes.
To be honest, though, old-school stage makeup effectively requires drawing a bigger pair of eyes over your own and IMO that red dot is the reddish squishy bit in the inner corners of your eyes, done up for theatah.

"Too heavy"; "scary bellydancer"; and "clockwork orange bellydancer", while somewhat descriptive, are relative terms.
What you've done is well-executed, but what look are you going for?

Re: The eyes have it? Pictures.*opinions plz*
Something pretty that suits me, lol? I don't know, that's a good question. I like a bit of retro, but I don't want to look silly or dated or like I'm doing schtick; still current, maybe with a nod at retro/60s. I like smoky eyes but don't want anything too heavy or too dark (which is why I want to play w/adding some color). I'm fair skinned so I think the contrast between skin tone & smoky eyes seems greater than it is & that's why I was initially asking if it looked harsh or scary.
I don't want to look like I got heavy handed with the eye makeup in an attempt to 'look like a bellydancer'/'look exotic' (seen many dancers do this, which then later evolved into fantasy-type makeup where the lash line was extended into the temple & sent into curlicues). If it somehow happens to look 'exotic' (however that's supposed to look ,r:;), that's fine, if not, that's fine too, just as long as whatever it looks like is still a good look on me for dance.
Does this help any? ..l;,Last edited by TexasRuya; 04-16-2009 at 10:29 PM.
