Thread: Washing silk veils

I have a really nice veil that's half turquoise, half royal blue. A few weeks ago, I got a grease stain on it (veil class and lip balm do not mix). I washed the whole veil by hand using mild soap and cold water.

Yesterday, I noticed that the turquoise part has some staining from the darker blue ,f:: Not so much that it's noticeable at a distance, but I can see it close up.

How do you suggest that I wash the veil in the future? I don't want any more stainage happening. Thanks!

I would use Woolite and then hand wash it in cold water. If it still runs, maybe you could talk to a dry cleaners about dry cleaning it.

It sounds like the veil may still have some excess dye in it. That does sometimes happen. The best way to avoid having more of the darker color run into the lighter is to wash it in the future in a very large amount of water -- like a washing machine set to very very delicate -- and to not allow the veil to sit crumpled up while wet. Get it out of the washing machine promptly and hang it up with the lighter side up.

Depending on the dye process used it can be hard to get all the unfixed dye out of a veil. Some I have to rinse and rinse and rinse. Some never have that problem.

I have even had a bit of leftover dye from Akai products - lots of lukewarm water, and then I dry them flat on a white towel, so that whatever I don't want to go into the silk will be absorbed immediately. The towel may have a few light stains, but that will wash out easily.

I'd like to suggest throwing in a couple of the Shout color catcher sheets if you throw them in the wash. They work well for grabbing excess dye and preventing color run.

Since this topic is about silk veils, I hope no one minds me asking, but what's the best way to get wrinkles out of a silk veil?

I spray my silk veils with water and iron them quite damp.

If ironing is not an option, hanging them up in a steamy bathroom works pretty well.
