Thread: abla quality fringe - where to buy?

Hi ladies -

I'm going to purchase some fringe, and love the soft, glittering quality of abla fringe. I also once owned a meter of silver with palettes (I think originally from Palmier) that I sold - it was very nice quality.

Most recently, I purchased a fringe set from Scheherezade Imports, first quality Al Wikalah Fringe. There was no picture and while the color is awesome (turquoise ice iridescent sp?) it was seed bead fringe. Not sure I want to keep it. The types of fringe I have seen first hand were a long rectangle, clear on the outside lined with silver, abla-type smaller rectangles with smooth edges, smaller rectangles with sharper edges, and seed bead. I don't know the correct names of them.

Looked through the ISO and costuming threads, and didn't find one dedicated to fringe. So instead of spending my money "trying out" different fringe, can you ladies give me some advice? thanks!

wow, thanks Shala. In your opinion, who has the best quality of the smaller rectangular with smooth edges fringe? You know the feeling when you touch it, it's silky if that makes sense.

That's a good question and one I don't really think I can answer. The fringe I am most familiar with is called egyptian fringe. It's usually made from czheck (sp?) beads and is what you are calling rectangular with sharp edges. That is what was on the silver Sim I bought from you.

Egyptian fringe is what you will find at Turquoise, Scheherazade, Palmier, King of the Nile and the belly dance shoppe.

I have had mixed results with Horus and Isis. The swag fringe from them always seems to be made from round seed beads or rocaille beads. The straight fringe is usually the egyptian style. The straight fringe isn't always the most "sparkly". I've seen some good pieces and some that are kind of dull.

I don't know of anyone who sells the fringe you're looking for. You're best bet may be to look for an old beat-up abla and scavange the fringe off of it. Because chances are, the fringe will still be in great shape.

I've bought some fringe from Ebay vendors before. For the most part, it's crap. Jagged, sparse, falls apart in your hands when it arrives. There are some exceptions, but very few. I find it's a you get what you pay for situation.
