Thread: Where do feathers come from?

Okay I know where feathers come from but does anyone know where the feathers used on costumes come from? Are they harvested from birds or collected randomly?

Not sure, but I have heard of birds being bred exclusively for that purpose (for commonly used in costume or decorating feathers like peacock and such). Not sure if this was done in a "humane" manner, but since this was back in the 70's, I'm guessing not. I don't think there was the same level of awareness as we have nowadays.

Most are ostriches and they dye them to many colors. peacock feathers sheds them them or some zoos which is a shame in summer months cut the plumage off. I know ostriches are farmed for meat and such. But I'm not sure how they are treated. Bust ostrich and peacock feathers have been used for hundreds of years.
