Opinions on wearing a galabeya to an Israeli event?
I'm helping out a friend who's been hired to do henna at a college event celebrating Israel's Independence Day, and she'd like me to wear something more festive than jeans and a tee-shirt. I have a green galabeya with a really pretty "over-tunic" but it occurs to me that this might be inappropriate. Thoughts?

I think a green galabeya would be fine.
The Jews came from the Middle East also, and Israel is located in the Middle East. They share some history and culture.
To most people, ethnic embroidery and decorations all look pretty much alike.
There is a small chance your galabeya may have a design that's traditionally associated with, say, Syria or Palestine, and a still smaller chance that someone might recognize the pattern. But I think that's highly unlikely. My in-laws are Jewish and totally clueless about ethnic clothing; to them, my folkloric dance costumes are just "hippie stuff". :)
But if you're concerned, a "hippie" top and harem pants or broomstick skirt is both festive and safely inoffensive :)

There is no problem.
Many Israelis are Middle eastern Jews ie. Mizrahi and Sephardim from Yemen,Iraq, Morocco etc.,therefore the galabeyya may be part of their traditional clothing.
Sure modern Israeli don,t necessarily wear this but I don't think that the galabeyya is inappropriate.
However if you feel uncomfortable don't wear it.
You can always opt for soemthing blue and white, colours which will surely highlighted that day.

Thanks, guys. I've opted to just wear the pretty over-tunic with a warmer top (supposed to be chilly and windy) and Melodia-like pants. That'll keep 'em guessing!
