What do you use to carry stuff to and from a gig?
This is sort of a spin off of the "What do you bring to a gig" thread. I tend to bring ALOT of stuff along with me just in case (though last time I danced I had to race home because I'd forgotten my belt...wtf?? Luckily everyone was very understanding).
Anywho, the bag I've been using has gotten much too small to carry everything I need. What does everyone else use?

At the moment I use a duffel which would fit comfortably under an airline seat. Ideally, I would have a small, cabin sized rolling suit case with 2 or three outside pockets so that you could put staples in them.

Small rolling suitcase with two outside pockets!
Travel to gigs is always by trains here, so I need it.

Depending on the gig a rolling suitcase or a large zip top LL Bean Canvas tote. The tote is actually more organized, it has various pockets around the sides where my performers essentials go (hair pins, safety pins, hair spray, etc.) It holds two full costumes and that's counting heavy bedlehs and 25 yard skirts.

small rolling suitcase w/two front pockets and a mesh pocket on the inside. In the outer pockets I keep a stash of promotional materials & my emergency kit (back-up cds, safety pins, pepper spray, deodorant...)
In the mesh pocket inside I keep my hermes sandals so they don't touch my costume (ick).

Garment bag. I've had a lot over the years, but this new one is my favorite; it's from Cabelas and is canvas with leather trim.It has lots of different hooks and hangers for holding. Two large inner pockets (on for my jewelry case and one for the makeup) and two outer pockets for promotional materials, zills, and everything that I've forgotten to put inside. Then it folds over and fastens and over the shoulder it goes leaving my hands free.

I use the rolling suitcase as well with a large tote on nights that I need more than one costume.
I do prefer the suitcase though b/c the bag gets heavy and pulls on my shoulders, causing pain.
I got a nice sturdy case at Ross for a low price.

Yup, rolling suitcase. Lots of little bags inside for miscellany.

Good choice. They really make life SO much easier.
I usually use my rolly suitcase. It's always packed with all my essentials and emergency "OH NO" items.
I also have a shoulder bag for when I have just one show and I want to travel light. That still always has some essentials in it.

Re: What do you use to carry stuff to and from a gig?
What do you all use for your jewelry? I've been trying to come up with a way to carry my jewelry that it won't get tangled up, lost, etc. I've tried zip lock bags but without using one for each piece of jewelry, it ends up a mess.
All the travel jewelry bags I find don't have compartments big enough for bangle bracelets and circlets.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: What do you use to carry stuff to and from a gig?
I just switched over to a multi compartment wallet that I got from Target to use for jewelry to bring to gigs. I keep the basics in there- a few different rhinestone necklace/earring sets, a couple rhinestone bracelets, too.
For Indian jewelry, which includes lots of bangles I use ones like these: Craft Storage Box - Small 4 Layer Square Snap N' Stack™ by Snapware®
I store all my Indian jewelry in them and I can snap them together in any configuration depending upon what I need to bring with me. I found ones that came in a small stack of two- one box was open and one box was divided in two- perfect for stacking large sets of bangles.

Costume and jewelry in a rolling garment bag that folds over in the middle so nothing is really crunched up too much, a small makeup bag that is pared down to just what I need (no piling everything in and then deciding when dressing what to use; I have to decide ahead what I'm going to do), a separate suitcase or duffle for street clothes, skin care, etc.

Re: What do you use to carry stuff to and from a gig?
I got a purse at Goodwill that has a light-colored interior (I hate the black interiors as I can really lose stuff in there!)
Inside it are some smaller zippered purses in loud-ish colors a. so I can spot them easily and b. so I can *just know* that the turquoise one has my wrist bangles. One has my coin necklace. The bright purple one has my bindi and the stuff to stick in on (it's so small!); depending on if I need to stick it on later or sooner.
I also use some ziploc sandwich bags for the minor makeup for take-along and for whatever else I need. Sometimes I use bubblewrap for coin necklaces or belts.
If there's not a lot of costume, the bag will fit inside my rolling suitcase. If there's a lot, like with 25-yard skirt and the bolero and the bedlah, then I hang it from the outside of the rolling suitcase.
FWIW, since all black rolling suitcases look alike, I put a funky bandanna and put an ID tag on it.Last edited by nadyasidhe; 05-10-2009 at 03:04 PM. Reason: grammar

Re: What do you use to carry stuff to and from a gig?
An obnoxiously purple and gold colored rolling suitcase covered in fleur-de-lis designs with a compartment on the inside that is attached to the top of it, but rolls out like a garment bag. It has a matching makeup case that attaches to the top of it. Definitely the deal of the day I found in the French market in NOLA.

Re: What do you use to carry stuff to and from a gig?
I keep my performance jewellery in a smaller box which has textile lining. This way I always know all the bits and pieces are in there and all I have to do is just slip the box into my bag. If you're afraid of jewellery getting dangled or just damaged by friction, I suggest little cotton bags or pockets which you can roll up and then place into a box to keep them all together. A little extra effort but well worth it as I see it.

Re: What do you use to carry stuff to and from a gig?
I usually use a rolling suitcase or a backpack, depending on how much stuff I have. Within those, plastic bags/cases to protect costumes from possible rain, makeup bags, hair bags, etc...
American Apparel has a line of lame fabric duffel bags that I'm thinking of getting to use instead of the backpack--a nice shiny upgrade!

I use a rolly suitcase, small enough to be a carry-on, but big enough to carry two bedleh-style costumes in. I plan to get a travel jewelry roll for my jewelry.
