Thread: buying sequins and material in Egypt

Dear Dancers

I need advice about buying beads, sequins and material in Egypt. I will travel by this summer and I was told that beads, sequins and fabric are very very cheap but i dont know where to find them and if there is an special place or street.

Well... I did not comparison shop. I bought several sets of beaded fringe at Al Wikalah -- it was certainly cheaper than buying them here. Check out Meissoun's page here.

If you go to Mahmoud Abd El Ghaffar's shop: It is on the main street in Khan el Khalili 73 Gawhar Al- Qayid St. (this may be his old address, although still at the same place just expanded) Just ask people for his shop and don't let them take you to their "uncle's" or "their" shop!! Everybody knows Mr. Mahmoud Abd El Ghaffar! Now when you walk out the door from his shop to the main street and turn left and walk a little ways you will see some bead shops, I go to some on the right hand side. The fabric is up from there I believe. However, ask anyone when you get there, especially from Mr. Mahmoud's shop and they will point you the way. Some people you will find will even take you to the shops, but be somewhat careful of this because it is possible you will be charged a little more because the person taking you there will earn some commission from the sale.

Just checked Meissoun's page and just note that Mr. Mahmoud now has a main entrance to his shop from the main street, that is the door I am referring to in my post. It is just past the little alley way that we used to have to go through to get to his shop.
