HELP! My hair is ruined!
Last weekend I asked my sister to trim my bangs and to trim a couple of inches off my hair so that it would be just below shoulder length. She always trims my hair and does a great job. Until last weekend.
My hair is thick and tightly waved/loosely curled with tighter curls around the back of my hed.
She must have gone nuts. She trimmed my bangs straight across like a bowl cut (ugh) and took about 3" off the length all around so that it is below shoulder length in the back and above shoulder in the front. Then she razor cut the underneath layers "to release the curl." She had never done that before. But it looked good. But she didn't stop there. She razor cut the top layer too. That is the problem. She went overboard. The top layer is now like straw, frizzed and sticks out from the soft curls underneath. I tried super conditioning. I tried using a curling iron on the top layer. I tried defrizzers. It looks horrible and now the whole thing looks like a brillo pad. My beautiful hair is gone. it looks like I have a halo of split ends.
What can I do? The razored parts are so short in some places that it is hard to even put my hair up. I can't believe she did this to me!

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
Yikes this is catastrophic! And I mean it, when hair goes wrong like this it is pretty darned traumatic. I remember having a perm about five years ago and one of the perm curlers came out complete wtih segment of hair! I had a chunk missing at the back for a very long time. And in January I supidly had 6 inches cut off my locks and had bangs cut and I looked like a freak. IT has stated to grow otu again now but it was not a pleasant sight.
But back to your problem - have you tried putting serum on your dry or nearly-dry hair, particularly on the top layers? It should stop the split-endsy look by bringing the ends together more.
Other than that the only thing I can suggest is to blow wave it into smooth, big waves rather than curls. Use the biggest round brush you can find, or even use those huge velcro rollers. The layers shouldn't be too much of a problem if you reduce the curl to a soft wave (fingers crossed!).
Best of luck Souzan, I feel your pain!

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
If your hair is naturally curly, I'd recommend Bumble & Bumble's Curl Conscious spray-in. It's not cheap, but it's very good at re-creating your natural wave/curl when your cut seems to take it away like your top layers). I think some salons may even carry a travel size of it so you can try it out before fully investing.

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
oil conditioning is great. Coconut or olive. Leave in as a long as you can & shampoo/condition out.
Could you wear a cloth type alice band while it grows out on top?
p.s. don't let her near your hair again!

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
argh!!!!! razor cuts are unkind on curly hair...at least they always have been for mine. try the curly girl method and let your hair rest...it needs to reorganize itself after the trauma.

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
Thanks everyone! I don't know what possessed her to do that to my poor hair. I am a curly girl and have not used shampoo for several months. The top layer is the bad part. I think she over did it. Its like a thin shag sitting on top of curls. I thought about going to a salon and having them layer the top more to get rid of the razored shag part but thta would just give me a curly mullet. Ugh! Went to the Bumble and Bumble website and love the recipes for all the curly/wavey looks. I can wear hairpieces for performances but I have some business meetings coming up where I need to look more polished. Pulled out an old wig I haven't worn in years last night (shoulder length layered bob with straight hair) and it will do for those occassions. I think I'll play around with with rolling or loose pin curls for the top layer and see how that turns out. I used a curling iron this morning but it is so humid that as soon as I walked outside it reverted to frizz again.
Headbands are my friend. So are combs and other hair ornaments. When you have curly hair sticking things in it to hold it back is essential!

Whoa, that is intense! How's your relationship with your sister doing? Your hair will grow out eventually but you only have one relationship with your sister. I would be mad, though. And upset.

I would go with the serum and the bigger hair roller. But I would be dying too if this happened to me.
Are you thinking of going to somebody else in the future to get your hair cut? I know I would )-;

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
With the curlygirl method you wash your hair with conditioner. The suggested conditioner is Sauve Naturals and that is what I use. It is soft and shiny and curly and clean! Then you do hair plopping. What you do it is lay a tee shirt out on a flat surface and bend over and plopp your your wet hair on top, turn the corners of the shirt up and tie to make a kind of turban. Better than wrapping a towl around the hair cause the curls just plopp into place and aren't pulled at all. You can work a little product into the hair at the roots prior to plopping. Tee shirt absorbs the moisture. When almost dry take hair down and let air dry or use a diffuser and your fingers (no brush or comb) to finish the job.

Oh, ouch! :( I'm a curly girl too who has had a few botched hair cuts so definitely feeling your pain. I have been using Ouidad products and am really liking the results. Their Climate Control has been doing great things to control frizz on humid days. Might work for you too. :)

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
Eeeeeek! Poor Souzan. I feel your pain. You and I share the exact same kind of hair -- curly & wavy, and out-of-control frizzy in humidity. (Or when I sweat.)
So a totally get what you mean about the top layer. Lylagus is right: curly hair + razor cut = disaster.
I have two pieces of advice: 1) Do not -- I repeat -- do not -- go to a salon and have them mess with the top layer. You'll get that "stair-step" effect. 2) B&B is amazing and wonderful but verrrrrrrry spendy. If you're looking for a go-to serum that you can use daily without having to mortgage your house, I highly recommend Neutrogena Triple Moisture Healing Shine Serum. Get it at Target or any drugstore and you will be amazed at how well at works.
Good luck!

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
The bad thing is that my sister didn't even tell me she was going to razor cut. All of a sudden she was wacking away at it! I will never let her do that again!
Anyone used Noodle Heads products?

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
there is an adjustment period where your hair can look funky...i haven't used shampoo in months and my hair actually feels cleaner and healthier than it did before : ) If i get product build up i rinse with a vinegar/water or lemon juice/water solution and it takes care of things

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
I've used some of the Noodle Heads products and I don't have any complaints. They help keep some sort of curl in my hair when I wear it curly even with the weight from length.
I'm sorry you had a bad haircut though... the growing out process is horrible!

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
Hi Souzan,
Noodle Head products are very good, esp. the curling cream (although I'd recommend going easy on this one, a little goes a looong way).
I was a hairdresser a few years back (a lifetime ago it seems *g*), and one thing that they drilled into us in hair dressing school is *never use a razor on curly hair*. Ever. That being said, I would actually recommend that you go to a salon to have the razored ends trimmed. Reason for this is that razor doesn't do a clean 90 degree cut on the hair shaft, but rather it is a long and angled one. Since curly hair tends to be coarser/drier than straight hair, this is an invitation for split ends. Then you'll have a real frizzy mess. On average, the "razor-effect" lasts about 2-3 weeks. After that it starts to fray. So no rush to get to a salon, but when you do, ask for a stylist that has experience with curly hair and be upfront about this being a correction job.
In the meantime, head bands are your friends. Clips, barrettes, or even a slicked back look can help ride out the first couple of months.
HTH some,
Kem

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
oh no! i feel your pain. razors should not go near curly hair.
i'm still growing out the hatchet job from a few months ago
have found coconut oil to be very helpful because its physically heavier then most oils and solid at room temp so helps simultaneously weigh down the fuzz and condition.
and then theres wigs. your sister should buy you a beautiful, high quality virgin remy hair piece as an apology ;)
if nothing else works, perhaps try old fashioned pomade, though its very anti-curly girl, unless you can find one without petrol products

Re: HELP! My hair is ruined!
UPDATE! Okay on Thursday I went to Sallys and bought all the Noddle Heads products. I haven't used all of them yet but did use the curl softener and the leave-in conditioners. On Friday I headed out for a dog show weekend. For those who haven't been to a dog show, attire is business wear--suits, pant suits, dresses with jackets--and flat shoes. I had summer suits but didn't want frizz, so I wore a wig all day Saturday and Sunday. Its a shoulder length layered pageboy that I used when I needed something sleek for business meetings when having a bad hair day. I guess I wore the wig for 10 hours on Saturday and about 8 hours today. Its an open weave capless wig so its not too hot, but the end result is that at least for now the razor cut edges are softer and not frizzy. Under the wig I had my own hair pulled back into a tight pony tail.
I have 3/4 wigs and long falls for performing so I am okay for that. Next I am going to try using some big rollers. Fortunately she left my hair long enough to pull back.
No more razors!!!!!
