It's a fine line to walk, and honestly I believe it's the mark of a true professional dancer who can do both at the same time. I like to think I hit that mark at least most of the time.

We had a thread a while ago where Shira posted a quote that I think sums up my feelings perfectly about the art/entertainment dichotomy - "It's a Party, not an Arty." ..l;,

Well, if an Arty is an Art Party, then doing really bad fusion at a G.P. birthday party must be a Farty. A Fusion Art Party, or a Faux Arty.

Ha ha ha, sorry. I had to.

In all seriousness, I did post a spinoff on this, under The Rest. I, too, am striving to hit that mark 100% of the time. I'm getting there ..l;,

Mahasti, you hit it on the head. Accommodating, absolutely. That level of "customization" is a bit over the line and goes into "dress up doll" territory for me. And as someone else said above (oops, sorry, forget who and it's not on my screen!), to offer this level of detail might also open them up to other "special requests" and "kooky behaviors".

I think the difference is the idea of having a costume catalog for people to choose from. It takes it farther from "dance performance" and closer to "costumed character" for me which isn't where I want to aim my energy.

Another part of the negative reaction is probably based on another type of performance where you can choose your dancer's outfit. There are 'lingerie stores' and peep shows where you choose your outfit and your dancer for your custom show.

When I have had specific costume requests from clients they have either come in the "color, style" variety or the "dress sexy for me" variety. The former I am happy to work with, but, in general - if I receive the latter I will turn down the gig out of hand.

Nothing against those who like to have a costume catalog for their clients - it just doesn't feel right for me, so I don't do it.
