Growing hair out from the 'pixie' cut?
Ack, I'm taking the plunge! Hide the scissors! Do away with the thinning shears! Toss the razors! Yep, I'm going to grow my hair out. From a 'pixie' cut. It's been a month and a half since I've last cut it and the bushiness and lack of shape is driving me nuts. Since I do my own hair, and I'm a bit OCD, if I even start to trim my hair it will be Jamie Lee Curtis short again. She's a gorgeous lady and looks great, but at this point in my life I think more hair would make me feel and look younger. Anyway, does anyone have any advice? Cheap/free fixes for those bad hair days that will be coming? Photos of their own grow outs? Encouragement? How long did it take you to go from ultra short to shoulder length?
I can't wait to be able to do hair tosses and playfully hold my hair up while doing hip sways...wigs just don't cut it, heh, heh, heh. ..l;,

Re: Growing hair out from the 'pixie' cut?
I had a pixie cut for five or more years, finally going long again. The first 6 months or so were the most painful, I only let my hair dresser trim the back (too keep me from having a mullet) and do a little to keep the rest fresh looking. On the worst days I would just use cute barettes or hair pins on the sides (it was the bangs growing out that was the worst).
When it finally got to a chin length bob, it got much easier, and eventually it got long enough to pull back. :-)
This is a pic of when it finally got "easy" to manage (was my trip to Oslo 2 years ago, the giant in the photo with me is a friend who lives there):

This was my hair 3 months ago:

For dancing I wore fake braids or scarves to hide the mess till it grew out!

Head bands, hair clips, scarves, hair elastics, these things will all be your new best friends.
Honestly you need a hair stylist who can cut your do (once it's grown a bit) into something that will be flattering as it grows longer.
My hair used to be like an inch at it's longest, I really had to fight the urge to go in and get it trimmed (because when it was short I had to cut it like once a month, my hair grows fast.)
You will go through akward hair phases, but it's nothing a little ornamentation can't fix.

Headbands and cute hair ornaments! 3/4 wigs are wonderful! They come in differnet lengths, some with built in headbands. The front of your hair shows, the rest is covered by the wig. Great if you have bangs . When your hair gets long enough to get pulled back into a tiny pony tail you can add clip on hair pieces. Much fun! Hides the potential mullet that happens as the hair grows out.

Ha ha ha! The 'mullet' is something I want to avoid at all costs. Not a good look, and I've actually had one (yep, child of the 80's). The last time I grew it out I was preggers (10 years ago) so it seemed easier. Basina your shorter cut was darling (and your longer hair is pretty too). Did you guys wear faux hair every day or just for performance?

Patience, and find a good hair dresser who is on board with the whole growing it out thing. For a long time I had one who I went to see every 8 weeks. She kept the cut clean so that I didn't feel messy. In 6 months I went from ear to shoulder.

Re: Growing hair out from the 'pixie' cut?
I wore faux hair for dancing, but also for going out clubbing and on a few other occasions as well. When it got long enough to put into a tiny nub of a pony tail I was able to wear a really NICE looking pony fall that I got (people thought it was my real hair). I was more apt to wear that places than a 3/4 wig.
I agree that a good hairdresser is key, mine was great at doing what he could to make the transition less painful ;-)
For work I just sucked it up and

I started growing out my pixie cut in 2005, and it took three years to get it just above my bra strap:
Starting point:

8 months later:

1 year later:

2 years later:

3 years later:

I now wear it at or a little below my bra strap.

It's taken me five years to grow from having a buzz cut to having hair down to my butt. My biggest suggestion is echoing what everyone else has said, have someone you trust, who won't take off to much, but will trim your hair to prevent the dreaded mullet. You will be able to grow it out much faster if you keep your hair from separating into two separate haircuts.
Once you can get it to a stub of a ponytail you can wear all those great clip in hair pieces, and once you can pull it up it goes by very quickly.

Wow, Galatea, your hair grew fast! I figured mine will take about three to get where I want. Did anyone color their hair during grow out?
Mahsima, how long did it take before you could pull it back?

It was about a year before I could pull it back into a little stub of a pony tail, but my hair was also half an inch long or so at the start, so it might take you a bit less time.

Re: Growing hair out from the 'pixie' cut?
I grew my hair out from about half an inch all over - no, wait, less. Not shaved but right down to the skin at nape and sides, fraction more elsewhere.
It helped that I was Not-A-Goth in the 80s at the time, but I just used to spike it up, and when it got too heavy to do so, I had it thinned, which made it less weighty. Then my boss gave me what I still think is the greatest haircut of my life, which turned my, hmm, three inch hair into a softly spiky edgy elevated bob with a fringe.
It is very easy to get to a short layered bob by letting the sides grow down and keeping the back short. Then you just let the layers grow out, if that is your plan. I kept a fringe the whole time. Before you know it, you have a jaw-length bob and you can just let it grow from there. There's usually an annoying Soccer Mom period when it just seems to sit at your shoulder, and then it suddenly seems to drop.
But it's a job, for sure, and you just have to be patient.

No kidding. A month and a half in and I've got the 'short granny hair' hairdo. Time to find a good hair dresser, eh?

Re: Growing hair out from the 'pixie' cut?
My hair (and my nails) grow really, really fast. When I had the pixie cut, I had to get my hair cut every four weeks to keep it from looking insane.
Mine is colored (home hair kit) in all of the pics I posted. I don't even know what my real hair color is, it's been so long since I've seen it! ..l;,Did anyone color their hair during grow out?

I color mine as well (I am outside a good bit and the sun tends to give me bronzey highlights that I dont much care for). So, yes, I still home dye every 2-3 months.
