Ironing skirts
Hihi folks,
I have a pharonix skirt that is really in need of some ironing. The problem is that it is all decorated with sequins (like those skirts generally are). Would you just iron around the sequins or do you think it would be ok to turn it inside-out, put a towel between the skirt and the iron and iron the whole thing that way?

Re: Ironing skirts
If it were me, I'd turn it inside out and steam it. But I haven't used my iron since I bought my steamer- hate the iron. Hate, hate, hate. Love the steamer. Selling the iron in a garage sale for a buck. Yay steamer! (sorry, haven't slept much, and just got off the phone with an annoying student who's dropping my class because she didn't completely master the art form in one 90 minute class). Anyway...

Re: Ironing skirts
If you don't have a steamer, try turning it inside out, cover with a damp towel and press. Try an unobtrusive place first.

Re: Ironing skirts
Azhia, I'd avoid the sequins, and use as low a heat setting as possible. Iron on the reverse.
Another option is to steam it by hanging it in the bathroom and turning the shower on HOT...maybe the weight will hang out the wrinkles???

Re: Ironing skirts
I've ironed beaded/sequins skirts before and never had a problem. Just turn it inside out and iron on the reverse side. Using a presscloth or towel is an extra layer of protecion. Go easy on the heat setting.

I vote for getting a steamer! I have one and love it so much, that I threw out my iron.

Re: Ironing skirts
I've done my liquid skirt with an iron and it's come out just fine. I have nice thick towels that I use between my ironing board and the skirt - skirt of course inside out so that the sequins can press into the towel. I put the iron on the lowest steam setting and lightly iron while pressing the steam button. It looked marvelous once again when I was finally done with it. ..g.:

Re: Ironing skirts
My boyfriend ironed one of my lycra Pharaonix skirts (because I don't iron, LOL), and it came out just fine. I couldn't tell you if he used steam or not, but I'm pretty sure he just ironed straight on the "right" side of the fabric.

I don't have experience with steamers, so is this something that can be bought in the appliance section of Wal-Mart?

You might be able to find a hand-held one. Amazon sells them, both big and little, and you can check out the ratings while you are at it. Re: Ironing skirts
Thanks, guys! I just ordered the one maurazebra posted. I spent 20 minutes trying to iron a skirt before my last gig, and still didn't get all the wrinkles out. Not to mention how wrinkled all my veils are right now. If this saves time and helps me with those veils, it will be well worth it.

Darbla, lmk how the Conair steamer works for you. I have a handheld one and it does jack sh**. I've been coveting a better steamer, but am not ready to plop down $100+ for one yet.
[sigh]... off to do battle with the iron again...

This is the one I got for Christmas - it's full size, and you can get one for a little more than 60 bucks.
