    "Maternity" clothes

Not real maternity clothes, of course, but what on earth is up with all the clothes being maternity-shaped? Nobody looks good in them, not even the models on the store walls! Who thought this was a good idea? I hope that fashions change, and very quickly.

Also - why is it that juniors has a ton of nice clothes but when you start looking in the women's section, everything looks like something your grandmother would wear?

to each their own... here the summer fashion is neon/violent-colored potato bags and thin underwear-like leggings that look like something an anorexic grandma would wear under her clothes in winter. and me having gained a size i need to buy new clothes ..cr.: i think i'll stick to wearing what i have that still fits me and doing the laundry twice a week, thanks...

    Re: "Maternity" clothes

I know I'm probably in the minority, but in the summer I love soft, knee length babydoll dresses with empire waists. For my shape (muuuuuch wider on the bottom than on the top) they are quite flattering and most importantly for me, comfortable. I refuse to show my legs from the knee up and can't stand anything that clings to my butt, hips or thighs.

I also am delighted that the maxi dress is back in fashion, and picked up a couple at Target last week (maxi dresses : Target Search Results) and I love them. I don't even have to make sure my legs are shaved when wearing them!

The one caveat is that the material has to be soft, drapey and t-shirt like. If the material is more of a stiff cotton, the skirts make me look way bottom heavy because the sides stick out so much.

    I blame Juno.

    *runs away*

Seriously, though. What happened to clothes that accentuate a woman's body? It is a real challenge to feel sexy when you're wearing a burlap sack with buttons and bows, all with leggings underneath. And if you're 4'11" like me? Lollipop Guild, here we come!

Satin - well, that's the thing. Juniors/miss still has those kinds of fun clothes but every time I have to look in the women's section I can't find anything I like. Am I just supposed to roll over and accept that I'm a grownup now and can no longer wear anything except Dockers?

Exactly the way my mother feels. Definitely not saying you are old. She just feels a lot of the stores she use to shop at have things that are way too short, too long, or too young. Not to mention she is petite. I have to resort to making her some clothes when I have the time. My mother would definitely not look good in one.

I am with Laura on this one. I am pear shaped and empire waist are one of the tops that I can wear. They just can't be boxy looking. I can do the long Maxi dresses, as I am tall. Right now I have so many after having a baby, I need to conceal my tummy. I have had some evening tops like this that I purchased a couple of years ago when they came back out. They are very comfortable.

This has been the case for the last 2 - 3 years. Which is why i haven't shopped for at least that long! Hate it!

Of course, I also have a couple of good friends who are designers!

enjoying the heck out of it while pregnant - I didn't need to buy real maternity clothing for a long time. I can still wear some of the stuff I bought at Zara last fall.

It's all quite fitted here. Empire line balloons are so last summer.

    Re: "Maternity" clothes

The influx of empire-waisted tops seems to have been brought on to conceal the muffin tops of the masses of women and girls (many quite young and not-so-plump) who wear low-rise jeans with too-tight "waistbands" and have no idea where their real waistlines are supposed to be.

I do like the femininity of the empire waist, but it is odd that so many items (seems it started with the tops) at stores like "Forever 21,", etc. geared towards young girls can often pass for maternity wear.

Good. Hopefully the NZ look will inspire an American trend.

I'm sick of worrying that strangers will pat my belly when I wear this season's hottest looks.

I have exactly the same issue. "Gifted" as I am in the chest area, I have a little waist and anything that isn't shaped (tunics, men's t-shirts, anything) makes me look like I'm expecting. And considering I'm only 18 and look younger, it is definitely NOT good look.

    Re: "Maternity" clothes

I'm actually in fashion heaven for a change. Peasant blouses, cargo pants, gladiator sandals, beaded and embellished *everything*, and I would just love to run and jump into a pile of the safari stuff - I could just bathe in it. I've missed this kind of stuff. If only I had some cash I'd buy everything in sight and stock up for the next few years. I've been fashion deprived the last several...

ok, this veers a little bit off topic - but has anyone ever seen a more "bellydancer-y" shoe than this?

(I'm not sure I altogether dig the sandal, but when I saw this, I just thought how undeniable it is that this designer is definitely raiding some bellydancer's closet for inspiration...)

I agree with this observation - why is this!? We need more hip stores for folks in their 30's and up.

Yes, I think the seam has gone over the bust instead of under this year.

just curious - if you like what they have in the juniors and not in the womens - why would you not just shop in juniors - the sizes are pretty much the same? ... I almost never shop in womens

and I'm in the minority here, I suppose, I love the loose, flowy tops and skinny bottoms right now ... they suit me - I'm tall and not particularly "well endowed" or anything and my legs are one of my best features - but it would be nice if there were nice, flattering choices out there for every body type.

I usually browse the juniors for ideas, but oft times the sizes are too small. And I've found sometimes the construction is a little cheapy or the idea is slightly more bold or revealing than I'm after. Ideally, I'd like a slightly toned-down, more sophisticated, and more comfortable "hip". But yeah, I do check it out and sometimes find stuff.

I can shop in the juniors department for tops, but I can't even get my ankle into a pair of juniors pants.

ah - I see - I never realized the sizes weren't comparable ... at over 30 I'm still not very "womanly" shaped ;-p
