Thobes/Khaleegy dresses
I have a beautiful red silk one. Do any of you who have them ever wear them for anything other than dancing? I would like to, but am shy - b/c I am not from the middle east, nor am I there geographically.

Re: Thobes/Khaleegy dresses
I've seen them worn as coverups over a costume.

YEs, that's what mine was used for. I was wondering about the "real world".

Re: Thobes/Khaleegy dresses
When I bought my favorite thobe in Cairo many years ago, the owner said that his wife planned to wear a similar one for evening wear. I guess it would have to be belted up somehow for that...

Re: Thobes/Khaleegy dresses
i bought a kaftan in bahrain when i first started learning to dance. the tailor and the hotel people whom i shown it to told me it was a "bahrainian party dress" and that the women there wear it over other clothes (no belt) when they go to parties. only when i saw the youtube khaleegy clips (introduced by bhuzzers) and learned that women in gulf area have gathering wearing this kind of dress, i realized that i bought a khaleegy dress.
when i bought it i thought i would casually put it on when i'm with boyfriend at his home so i would look casually glamorous like a film star but my mum told me i would look like i'm off my head so i didn't. i wore it as coverup once but because it was too long (bahrain people said the dress has to touch the ground and when you walk you lift it up a bit) it was inconvenience.
i still think it's casually glamorous to wear it at home if your home is big (my bf's flat is tiny). but now i can never do that because my mum's voice will be telling me off in my head. also, mine is see through shocking pink with gold embroidery so i guess it looks a bit too hilarious.

Re: Thobes/Khaleegy dresses
When I wear it as a "sparkly" cover-up (for certain venues), I tuck up the sides into the belt of my costume. It blouses in front and back and you won't trip.
