"Not to Prime is a Crime"

Words of Napoleon Perdis, the man who came up with an outrageous shade of h-h-hot pink eye shadow that I love to this day (and is no longer available!). ,m::

    Should you prime? See above.

Here is a list of various types of primers to get you started on your primer (translate=smoother foundation application, protection barrier against moisture loss/excess oil/scary makeup products, longer lasting makeup application, only very little foundation needed once you prime, line smoother/pore filler, etc.) journey:

    Sormé "Fresh Start"
    Skindinavia "t-zone makeup primer"
    Becca "Silky Hydrating Primer"
MAC "Prep + Prime Skin Refined Zone Treatment"
    Smashbox "Photo Finish"
    Lancôme "La Base Pro"
Make Up Forever "HD High Definition Primer"
Gerda Spillman Swiss Cosmetics "Hydro-Pearls Moisture Lotion"
    Alison Raffaele "face forward primer"
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics "OCC Skin: Primer"
    Korres "Face Primer"
    Youngblood "Mineral Primer"

[Source: "SKIN primer", On Makeup Magazine, Spring 2009]

I use on myself: DHC "Velvet Skin Coat"

Oooh I just bought hot pink shadow (HIP) to match the new pink bits in my hair! The color's not as intense as I'd like, maybe I need to prime.

I tried primer once -- I think it was a Revlon product? I used it of and on until the tube was gone but could never really tell the difference. Guess I need to try a different product.

Prime that pink shadow! Or apply wet. Or apply a pink cream underneath (MAC now has Paint in "Cotton Candy").

Yes. Try the Monistat for the least expensive experiment in primer. ..g.:

Roll back to the anti chafing gel. It works as an eyeshadow primer? what does it do? Must try...

I put the Monistat Anti-Chafing stuff on just moments ago for the very first time, and am letting it set a little before buffing some mineral makeup on top of it! But it's not a medication for itchy problems specific to the hoo-hoo area; it's just a silicone for reducing friction. That stuff's been on the sports market for years, but most women didn't know about it until Monistat started marketing it.

Hey, I have that Monistat gel. I got it because my skin became very sensitive around my knees after I did an excessive amount of walking in rather scratchy jeans. I'd heard you can use it as a makeup primer but have not yet tried it out.

I only prime my eyelids with Urban Decay's stuff, but it has definitely helped my eyeshadow. I think I've gone almost 24 hours with creaseless shadow that looks pretty true to application

Azhia, I got both of your DVD's a couple months ago. I tried MAC for the first time. I'm really clueless about makeup, but she was patient and helped me pick stuff out. She recommended a paint pot to me and it is a miracle. I never thought to use a primer before and it really stays in place nice! I'm in love with their eye shadows now :)

Re: "Not to Prime is a Crime"

Add me to the dedicated users of Monistat Anti-Chafing stuff group! I couldn't believe how much smoother my makeup applied, looked, and lasted over it last night. I'm going to go buy my best friend a tube of it and hand it to her, because she's not going to believe me to go buy it herself!

But..... does this really hold up on stage, under lights, thru a sweaty hour or so?

Re: "Not to Prime is a Crime"

I tried the Monistat gel for the first time the other day, too. Now, I've never tried a primer before, so I can't compare, but makeup did seem to go on a bit more smoothly and look more polished.

What I want to know is, who first thought of this? I mean, who first said to herself, "Hey, I think I'll put this stuff that I use on my inner thighs, underboobage, and armpits on my face"? *g*

Re: "Not to Prime is a Crime"

Related Q (I think), about cream eyeshadows:
I sometimes use a cream shadow as a base layer under a powder shadow, not just to prime for longer wear, but to get a truer color from the powder -- like the pink under pink that Azhia recommended above. But what about keeping cream shadows themselves on if you don't want to put powder over them? My MAC Paints set and don't go anywhere, but I have some Revlon creams in pretty colors that just seem to slide off. Would applying cream over a powder base have a similar effect to powder over cream, is there a technique I'm missing, or do I just keep using them as a base and give up on wearing them as the top-level color? Thanks in advance for any advice, makeup genies!

Probably the same person who put Preparation H under her eyes, took her makeup off with Crisco, and used Bag Balm on her hands. Oh, and Cowboy Magic for her hair!.

I love love love cream products!
I would apply the Revlon creams over a MAC Paint - type product. It will prevent the cream from settling in the lid lines/creases. Although I do find that the drugstore cream products are more slippery/oily than the heavier pigmented ones (like from Ben Nye or Kryolan, which go on pretty intense and stay dry-ish); perhaps b/c they contain more mineral oil and actually have less pigmentation.

I have a bottle of cheap olive oil on my vanity for taking off stage makeup. It works the best on eyelash adhesive.

Almond oil is my favorite makeup remover. It works great and is super gentle. I find that olive oil stings my eyes, but then so do most "gentle" eye makeup removers.

I use the ponds "clean sweep" cloths to remove my makeup even eye makeup. It won't sting your eyes. I use the mac paints or urban decays primer and I have no problems.
monistat I don't know I'm not sure about going out of my box quite yet.

    Oh boy, here's a thread I almost wish I hadn't opened! ..l;,

But like the OP, I too have been looking for a hot pink, or preferably SCREAMING fuchsia eye shadow - to little avail. Even Mac doesn't seem to have one, at least not as bright as I want...
